Theory is that when encapsulated in epoxy the wood will not give up or suck up any moisture. If I understand it right, epoxy will displace what moisture is in the wood when it is applied. If I am mistaken about this someone please set me straight.

Yep Jack
When the epoxy starts curing and squeezing that little chunk of wood it gets tighter and that is why it out gasses making those little bubbles in the finish,so always leave at least one so the moisture can escape.
Seriously the penetration of the epoxy does displace some moisture and the heat generated when it is curing gets rid of some more.
The only thing wd 40 is good for is to sell. Been more stuff messed up by wd than it ever helped especially guns. The displacing water I could never figure how is something that is lighter going to push around a liquid that is heavier.

Rons right, WD40 is a very volative oil. Put it on a gun and stick the gun in the closet and in 6 months (at least on the Gulf Coast) it will have rust on it. Keep it off stuff you care about.

Belly so far I am happy with the process,it is a little more work in some ways but easier in others. I cant wait to get her finished and weigh the hull.

Ron.....

Will you stop taking so many coffee breaks and long naps during the day and get the boat done.
We want to see it on the water. It sure is looking good from what you are letting us see and teasing us with the pictures of it. Just think , folks say Texans have no sence of humor but Ron is sure proving that idea .... wrong.

Just picking on you , take your time and create a masterpiece for your pleasure..... All of us are with you on this build and following your progress , even the quiet guys who are not saying anything. I know that for a fact , over a 1,000 folks have clicked on this watching you. Plus 641 over on Matt's web ( forum) site. http://www.jemwatercraft.com/forum/ :D

Ron, I think it's an interesting boat. Those slats will be more susceptible to being crushed in by rocks than plywood. You'll likely glass it the same inside and out as on plywood, but these will not have the cross-grain to help. Might well be lighter, though.

I think folks just want to see if it will float or is going to get a viking funeral :D
Jack I had the same fealings about the crushing but after working with it,I believe it will be stronger,it is much stiffer than the same thickness ply,and the glue lines work as a nondirectional brace. I will give it a work out and find out before long.

The Pirogue I made from the Red wood Strips is a lot stronger then any from the plywood I have made. All of them were or should I say glassed inside and out.... Those 1/4 inch strips sure add a lot of strength.

I really don't think you will have any problems with it as far as the hull integrity they do make a strong hull. Dang look at all the stripper canoes paddling all sorts of water and they hold up from Rapids to quiet water.
