    Strip Canoe Question

I agree with Bob, a friend of mine was talking about making a stripper kayak and said that he wanted to mill his own strips. He found a mill local, that had some really nice cedar 2x4 up to 18'. Told him if he bought twice as much wood as he needed, I would pay for half and help him cut them...

If you could buy only 1 sander???

I have both types, belt sander and random orbital. I think the ROS gets used about 99 percent verses the belt 1 percent (if that much). Belt sander is way to easy to get away from me. I have a Porter Cable ROS and it has served me very well for 3 boats. Course some of the ones from Harbor...

The Wood is the Filling , Not the boat.

Bearridge; Wish I had thought to take a "before" picture to post of the bottom side of my Ches 16 on Friday, prior to sanding down all the scrapes & gouges. After 5 years, it is one well used piece of livin' room furniture. DM mike

The Wood is the Filling , Not the boat.

Maine plywood is manufactured to a standard. Luan door skins are not. Below is a link to the BS1088 standard, which must be met for marine plywood to be listed as "BS1088" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BS_1088 Another link to some informative reading...

The Wood is the Filling , Not the boat.

Aaahhhh, but isn't that like saying that a cherry pie isn't a cherry pie at all, that in fact it is just a pie? Or would you agree that it is actually the filling that separates one pie from all the others and makes it what it really is, a cherry pie. Because with out the filling you just...

The Wood is the Filling , Not the boat.

My thoughts. A piece of 4mm Okoume BS1088 bought in Florida will bend and act the same as a piece of 4mm Okoume BS1088 bought in OZ, same as a piece of 4mm Okoume BS1088 bought in Brazil, same as a piece of 4mm Okoume BS1088 bought in England, same as a piece of 4mm Okoume BS1088 bought in...

A Question for Hairy "master builder" Mick

My work table sounds alot like how Jimmy W describes his. But I also have a additional 4 foot long x 2 foot wide section. So depending on how they are connected I have either a 4' table, 8' table, 12' table, 16' table or 20' table. Mine sit on sawhorses when I am using them, leaning against...

I can see Jack now, playing the didge, standing before a stack of Marshall amplifiers. Of course, his amps would have to go up to 11. DM mike

    Spar Varnish recommendations

Pettit Z-spar 1015 Captain varnish, thats the one I have always used. I believe that they are more referring to boats that have 24-7 contact with the water. All my kayaks have varnished hulls (over epoxy) and no problems below the water line. And a paddle varnished over epoxy shouldn't have...

    Bounce this Along

In our boat building world, I would strongly recommend NOT using it for this purpose. Or using a tack cloth around boats being built. Fabric softener sheets will leave behind the same stuff that prevents static cling, on the surface you are wiping down. Next thing you know, you have epoxy...

drip caps for Wally World paddle

You could take a piece of a foam pool noodle. Sand, carve or cut a concave shape into one end. Drill a hole (or enlarge the existing one, depending on the noodle design) to fit the paddle shaft. Then if you have a one peice paddle cut a slit on one side of the foam, Slide it on the shaft and...
