Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Thanks for posting, we appreciate and value feedback.(Even the Marine!!) Agree the deck would look better if the center line was raised and sloped forward, Texas River Rat did one similar looked great and no doubt would add strength to the front section of the boat. The Herring bone was...

    Assists for aging fishermen

Right now this rig is mostly to stay in my comfort zone :). I bought the hinges and fittings to copy a commercial stand up, but may stick with this for a while. I tried out my self rising seat today but found out I don't need it yet! It's on standby.

    Assists for aging fishermen

Thanks Chuck, A cane does work pretty well so does a pull up rope. One of our daughters gave me a cane with four spread out short legs. The rope was getting difficult and for a while my balance was off shortly after standing too quick. I may go back to the cane shortly. Your cane has some character!

    Assists for aging fishermen

With 80 years on the planet only a day away, I’m finding that physically some things are just more difficult .This has encouraged me to build more stable lighter weight boats, easier to load and move and a higher seat has made getting in and out easier. I’ve been working on two modifications...

This is a better picture of the trim cap on the gunnel. Time to start the finish steps on the bottom. Here John is scraping the seam where we doubled the glass cloth along the keel. Sanding is done so we’ll mask off the bottom for more fill coats. This masking, that I picked up somewhere a...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

On similar boats I’ve found the top edge of the cedar side gets quite a bit of wear from the double paddle, resting on the tailgate and such, to correct this I Started adding a trim strip of harder wod around the top edge. Most lumber yards carry outside corner trim. The trim I use is ½ “ . It...

Thanks for doing the testing, it's been a big help and very informative. It will be a while before I can give it a try for experience. We need to finish up the current boat. I suspect your documentation will help a lot of people, and more kids will get the chance to be outside in their own boat...

Thanks JD, This helps a lot. Today I was settled on a boat (design) and ready to write it down, it was straight sides (no curve) for simplicity. Then I woke up a while ago thinking about your sanding stick for chine logs and got out of bed to look it up and found your post. Don't know how I...

Thanks J D ! Hearing this from someone else(more knowledgeable in the style) helps me. I gave up on the Arrow head shaped stem after the first one. I found that some 10 year old can learn how to set up the saw to duplicate the stem angle THEN I plug in the saw a cut it for them. John has a...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

The clamps are gone, the inwales touched up a little bit, and on to the rod holders and transom brace. This process was pretty straight forward. Clamping the pieces in place was a challenge we settled on masking tape. Epoxy doesn’t require clamping pressure so that worked fine, unfortunately we...
