A couple pics from 2 weekends ago

I was fishing near Grand Isle, LA. It looks like perfect conditions, but no wind means gnats. The pictures don't capture the swarm around my head. Kurt

    Strip Canoe Question

No need for full length strips. I make a simple 45* scarf using a stationary belt sander. The scarf is placed over a form keeping it aligned while stripping. I've built 6 strippers and none of them had full length strips. Kurt Click on here for the picture...

    Cajun rowing skiff design question.

Not into archery. I Thought you might be a friend of my cousin. You would recognize our last name if that was you. I wouldn't mind making a bow, but that would require another hobby and I have too many of them and not enough time for them as it is. Kurt

Which boat, LONG and lots of pics....

Strip building is not tough, but this boat isn't the best for someone without experience. The building instructions included with the plans do not follow most of the strip building books on the market. In fact, Robb refers the builder to those books for the ins and outs of strip building. I...

Which boat, LONG and lots of pics....

I have the plans for Robb White's Sport Boat. http://www.robbwhite.com/sportboat.html I hope to start building in a month or two. I got a good deal on a 2 hp Suzuki outboard that I purchased out of the local classified ads. If it isn't strong enough for the boat, I can likely get my money...

    Bald Cypress Fleet

Can't wait to see what you are building. I hope to be cutting strips in a month or two for my next canoe. Where are you in LA? Kurt

    Trim wood weight differences?

For what it is worth, I like ash for gunwales, etc. I used cypress for my first canoe. It is lighter, but dents easy. I think red oak is prone to rot with exposure to water due to the open grain. I don't think white oak has this problem. Again, the above comments about oak are from memory...

    couple launch photos

Thanks guys. I don't know anything about the cold molded canoes. I think they are made over a male plug. At least the canvas ones with ribs are. Kurt

    couple launch photos

Here are a couple launch photos of the Chemaunis taken last month. I have more photos to add to my webpage, but I have been too busy to work on it. The Chemaunis is relatively fast for a 12' canoe. Tracking is decent for the amount of rocker and it will turn on a dime with an extended paddle...

    Action Fish Kayaks

Do a seach on www.kayakforum.com. I keep up with that forum and I don't recall anyone building one of their kayaks. There was a discussion recently about the kayaks. Kurt

    Paddle/general wood finishing question

Looks great. A couple years ago, I made a Greenland style paddle for my kayak. It has held up fine with only a coat or two of Minwax Spar Urethane. I don't like varnish in the grip areas. I use tung oil there. Kurt

    Smoky Mountains pics

Half the pictures were taken with the 1 mp Fuji that came with the Dell computer we purchased about 5 years ago. The most recent were taken with a Fuji Finepix S2000 (I think that is the model) 3 mp with 10x optical zoom. Almost all the photos were taken in the auto setting. It was purchased...

    Smoky Mountains pics

The elk were out at sunset at the North Carolina entrance to the park near Cherokee. A small herd would come out to graze in the grassy area near the welcome center. The deer I saw were on the Little River trail near Elkmont campground. Kurt

    Smoky Mountains pics

Thanks, but I have to give credit for my friend Rob for pics 6, 7, 8 and 9. As mentioned above, we also saw some elk and a couple deer. I got off a couple blurry pics of the deer. I couldn't get too close to them. I was using full zoom and it is tough keeping the camera steady. For a few...

    finished Chemaunis canoe

Steve, Here is a link with a few pictures of how I cut the scuppers http://www.loup-garou.net/random. I mark the location of the scuppers on the face of a board and use a guide bushing guided router to cut out the scuppers using a jig. Once the scuppers are cut, I add a fence to the bottom...
