    Prostate Exam importance

Thanks, David. It's something for all of us to think about. George

    Floating .22

On the Papoose, I wonder if it would be practical with a scope. If anyone has used one with the scope, does it hold point of impact after removing and reinstalling the barrel? You would have to make the barrel-to-receiver joint to pretty tight tolerances to accomplish that, I think, since the...

    Floating .22

Hard to figure what you could do with a .22 that didn't require accuracy. They are good for a lot of things, but all of those things require hitting a pretty small mark. gb

Since this the campfire chatter area I have a question.

You can get batteries that are sealed. Still damned heavy though. Probably ought to be strapped to the boat so it can't fall out... or maybe not. That is a discussion in itself. Better off strapping down the battery so you don't lose it if you capsize, or leaving it loose so that it...

    Springfield XD / XDM

I ended up buying a Springfield XD, .45 ACP, 5" barrel (what they call the "Tactical" model", whatever "Tactical" actually means. I think everyone in the shooting and outdoors business thinks they have to have "tactical" this and "tactical" that. You could probably find tactical socks and...

    Floating .22

Mmmm. That's unfortunate. I could tolerate funky stock dimensions for the sake of being able to store everything inside. Gonna wait and see how Piper likes his Marlin. Better to observe other people's experiments than to reach inside my own wallet! I travel quite a bit. I'd...

Jack- Have you gotten around to shooting the Henry Survival Rifle yet? Wondering what sort of results you've had. George

Ditto!! The marsh style is prettier than... I don't even know what. But there have to be some reasons behind that shape. Educate us, please. George

Since this the campfire chatter area I have a question.

For as long as you are able to use paddles / oars for primary propulsion when and if you need to, I'd go with the electric for all the same reasons David mentioned. Not sure if I'd mount front or rear. If I was using it to drive the boat, then rear. If I was using it to hold position and...

New Builder - 2 UJ boats to build

Maybe think about glassing just the bottom? Not very hard, or expensive, and it wouldn't increase the weight much since you could stick with luan rather than heavier BC pine. And I would think that glassed luan would be more impact resistant than BC pine without glass, though I don't have any...

    What Bow fishing rig

David, Would a side cast reel work? I don't bow fish, but I've often thought about getting an Alvey reel and trying it for rod and reel fishing. The reels look simple and rugged. We can get them here in the states ( http://www.alveyusa.com/ ), although I've never seen anyone using one...

A short Skiff run on the Ocklawaha River.

Nice looking boat. Did you try rowing in the normal manner? I feel like you should be able to make a lot more horsepower pulling the oars than trying to push them. Is it possible that your feeling that the boat isn't suited to working up river had more to do with rowing Cajun style than it...

    Double Blade Paddle Shaft

What kind of tools are useful when carving the styrofoam? I'm guessing there are some options out there... I've read before that styrofoam is or was used for making patterns in foundries.

    14' x 30" x 18 lb. Pirogue

This is a heck of an interesting idea. You could do anything with sheet metal that you could do with plywood, in terms of shapes. And combining wood with aluminum, putting each material in the place where it works best.... 8) I might have to build another boat! If you used one of these in a...

    Double Blade Paddle Shaft

Brilliant. You could mold a lot of things that way. Have you actually done that, Ron? GB

first camping trip of the season.

It's an interesting topic. You can control the river and have a certain amount of stability, but you are interfering with natural processes. Or you can let the river have its' way and you get long term chaos - which is a big deal when you consider what an important commercial shipping route...

    Fried Okra

Chuck is right about pickled okra. Excellent snack. And there is nothing slimy about the stuff if it is breaded and fried, or used in a soup or stew, or pickled. Now boiling it all by itself, that is just gross. I know people do that, but if that is the only way you have ever tried okra...

    Double Blade Paddle Shaft

How about wrapping a thin layer of fabric onto a very light weight aluminum tube (like a shower curtain rod, for instance) and just leaving the aluminum in place? Doesn't solve the problem of making an oval cross section, though. Hmm...

    Fried Okra

Good component for soups and stews. Thickens them. Doesn't seem slimy when used that way. It's also good when stewed with tomatoes. Boiled by itself, it does seem slimy. But chopped, breaded and fried, okra is a treat. George
