Mike, we're routinely building canoes of plywood that are only 10-11 pounds heavier than these 29 pounders. And, for under $1,000. Take the difference (say, $4,000), get a nice bicycle, and lose weight.

Several of us already have the bikes. Now - for the next part. (Ahem!)

Five grand for a factory canoe ? heck, I would be too scared to put it in the water!

As Jack said, with a little care and patience a similar boat could built for less than a thousand bucks and only be around 10 pounds heavier. That leave around 4k for important stuff like beer.

Didnt bill have one of there rejects on the trip on the Brazos

I think it was one of them , it was a factory second so the price was reduced for him. If I recall he paid $2,100.00 for his and it weighed 32 pounds.
The reason it sticks in my head is the Sasquatch I made was 30 pounds and cost me $700.00 to make it and I would joke with Bill that I can make 3 canoes for the cost of his one. :D
