I've mentioned this before. In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is a Canadian Bush Plane Museum. (Entry free, must donate to exit)

In there is a canoe that comes apart into three sections. The ends are not of an equal length. The shorter stem end fits inside the longer one, and the two nested ends fit inside the center section.

The joint does not have to be a complete bulwark, as some people believe. A rim around the edge does the job. The one in Canada had a rim of about 3" with a foam rubber bead run along it.
