ON THE BRAZOS — When the people floating down the big, reddish-brown river stopped their easy paddling and conversation, all they could hear or see was nature.
Highways were up there somewhere, beyond the banks, and a popular state park on one side and a big prison farm on the other. But those things might have been a million miles away to those down on the river.
"Isn't this wonderful?" said Brazoria County Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt and paddling a yellow plastic kayak, as she and a group glided down the river on a recent day. "More people should be able to experience this."
