Question for Kahuna

Hey Kahuna, Christmas is coming......and my son has just discovered (finally) fly-fishing. I'd like to set him up with some rudimentary tools and supplies to tie some flies this Christmas. Now, i used to tie DECADES ago......so I sort of know what one needs and how much of what, but things have changed in the last forty years. Any suggestions for vises, bobbins, winders etc? or should I just dig deep and get him some sort of ( one size fits all and hope for the best ) kit of tools ?

Thanks in advance for your help. Piper

Hi Piper,

I started out tying a couple years ago with the tying kit sold by Orvis. The vice is basic but has worked well for me. The materials were quite good. The best thing about it, though is the fly-tying manual that came with it. The more I learn about tying, the more I appreciate the wisdom of the instruction in that book!

Best wishes for your son with his fly fishing and fly tying!

GOOD DEAL

This is a good/great deal:

http://cgi.ebay.com/BASIC-FLY-TYING-KIT ... dZViewItem

It is almost like what Cody and I have. It is a good /decent vise.

I can give him enough to make a bunch of flies to get started. You just have to supply the hooks and Walmart straight shank hooks are fine. I use them mostly all the time.

Then when he becomes a "Big_Wig" and wants to commercially tye or something he can invest more money.
