Positioning the sides

I'm in a fog (pun intended) about the position of the sides on the stem and stern pieces for an Uncle John's pirogue. Is it right to move the side down to the bottom of the stem piece so that the bottom of the side ends where the narrower piece of the stem meets the wider piece like this?

Thanks in advance for responding. With epoxy and screws in this step I absolutely can't mess this step up!

Ok, I'm revealing my ignorance, but here goes. The stem and stern are provided in Uncle Johns kit. They are symetrical. Here is a picture:

That said, I am confused by upside down. Do I simply mount on the other side of the board like this?

Thanks a million everyone! - VTFogg

Hi VTFogg,

You had it in place like this (your pic shrunk a bit):

Try turning it over and flipping it untill it fits like this:

That should do it!

Think of it as an arrowhead , the pointy part goes forward while the wider part is towards the boats center. Then if the flat part (the bottom ) of it lines up with the bottom of the sideboard , it is correct.

It should be at a 45 degree angle from center facing forward away from the boat as in the picture stevesteve posted above.

Just a semi-sentimental note from an observer: It is neat as hell to see guys from all around the WORLD, gathering around a workbench to help each other build a boat. Really neat camaraderie!

Now, MAGGOTS, as you were!

ALL RIGHT....... WHO WOKE JACK UP ????????

I don't know how many times I have told folks .. When Jack is napping ... Let him ... SLEEP.
This happens every time when someone makes that mistake , He gets all mushy and sentimental and turns into a decent , boat building , helpful , and all round nice guy :)oops: For a Yankee) , then he realizes his mistake and reverts back to his normal truthful self (That/who we all know) to make up for it.

Many thanks stevesteve, and all others. Seems rather obvious now, and am feeling rather foolish.

It's a great thing to receive help from experienced builders from around the world. The only drawback is revealing my foolishness internationally!

Hopefully I can get the time to attach the sides tonight!

Who said that or told you that you have the right to have all of the foolish and fun , that is something all of us share and do.

As far as being experts , dream on ........ We have been in your shoes and done the same things , you do not have an exclusive right to that , that is what we share. Where we have been , what we wanted to know about and even the mistakes we have done but will not admit to , unless asked and still will not admit to. If I do not make at lease three mistakes a day then something is wrong and I sure get worried. :D

My mistakes stay with me.. I ask questions in the most general way, thus fooling everyone, that I did not make any mistake.
Nor do I need any of their help. ( God Forgive me!!)

See, Foggy! They bit, just like we thought they would. All you had to do was remove and reverse that stem piece for the single picture, and now they all feel good about helping you. Good on ya, mate!

Now you can put it back like it was and they'll be none the wiser that it was all staged.

Hi VTFogg,

No problem. Foolish is how you should feel if you had stuck it in place without asking.

Done worse myself. I have dismantled and fixed all kinds of stuff, rebuilt it carefully refitting all the fiddly bits and then found a vital final component on the bench. Arrrgghhhh... restrip!

Good luck with the boat.

I dono, it don't look like it will keep the water on the correct side at the moment.

Suggest a LARGE PFD on the little tyke prior to launch in that condition.
