Got a little more done this evening.

Rails for seat are tacked in place.

Cut the spacers for the front and rear hatch. Tomorrow I will cut and install the lip that the hatch covers sit on.

It's almost time to make her really shine. Hatch lips are installed and the boat is ready for varnish. Just need to give the epoxy time to cure a bit. It won't be long and I will give her the maiden voyage. I am getting pretty excited about paddling this boat.

Thanks Jack. I have high hopes for this boat and I think Matt does to. This is the nicest boat I have built so far. If the varnishing and rigging go well I may get to paddle her next weekend. Everyone who comes by the shop says I need to go ahead and test paddle her, Nope, not till she is complete. Because I may like her so much that I wouldn't want to take her out of service to finish up.

Went out after work and gave the boat a quick sanding to rough up the epoxy a little so the Varnish will adhere better.

I shot the first coat of varnish about 6:15 and will probably give it a second about 8:00.

It's getting mighty close to paddle time.

Second coat is on. I'll let it dry all day tomorrow and give it a light sanding when I get home. If it is early enough for it to skin over before dark I will shoot another coat on, if not I'll wait until Thurs. morning. The bugs are pretty bad once it gets dark. It's looking pretty good, only got a couple of bugs this evening before it skinned over. It was 112* in the shop when I shot it so it didn't take long to start setting up.

It's plenty warm in the shop this afternoon.

Gave the boat a quick light sanding with 320 grit.

I sprayed another fairly heavy coat on, and it was looking great. I was thinking this might be it, no bugs, no dust, no trash and slick as glass. Then I walked around to the other side and there it was, the biggest run you have ever seen. Oh well, I'll give it another sanding and another coat.

Varnish is done and I am going to start rigging tomorrow. Took a few tries to get the varnish down without any bugs or too much dust but it finally worked out.

I think I am going to run the hatch straps a little different than normal. What do think?

If anyone tried to hurt this boat intentionally y'all would have to take a collection up to get my butt outta jail.

P.S.
As much as I love my Freedom I think it may be time to update my profile pic.

It's a long drive from Greensboro, maybe I should just burn it to save us all the trouble of having to deal with it.

You burn that boat on purpose and I'll make that drive to smack you in the brain! And I think I might have to stand in line to get my turn.

Matt...

I will meet you there and put a head lock on him so he has to bend over and provide a target for you. You know , that area midway between the head and the feet.

That deck radius is more for easy assembly as a fiberglass boat. When I drew this for the 1st person who wanted to take a crack at building it, I drew it with an easier to assemble deck. The builder had a fit when he saw the sketches because it didn't look enough like the boat that inspired my design, the Sea Wind.

I think you handled that radius quite well, Darrel. I bet that will be a nice accent that is pleasing to the eye when it's all said and done.
JEM,
Shouldn't the sides have come up higher :?: (Instead of the deck having to bend down and over the sides) This would have allowed for a smooth transition from the sides to the deck curve :!: :!:

The deck could have been done a few different ways. The design was custom design job for a client that had some very specific desires. I think he was looking to create a mold and make a fiberglass version. Last I heard, that builder got half-way through the project and gave up on it due to moving or something.

Anyway, rather than do a complete redesign, I offered Darrel this one when he asked about a strip version of the S&G North Wind.

I think Darrel did a great job on it and it looks pretty good. Maybe I'll do an alternate deck one day. Maybe not.

I hate to resurrect an old thread but I stumbled on the answer to this posting that caused quite an uproar behind the scenes.

I usually take notes when drawing things up and attach them to my drawing files so I can look back at them later and figure out why I did something. There was some question on the NW as to why the radius on the deck. I finally, by complete accident, found the reasons why!

The Sea Wind comes in a "standard" hull depth and a "deep" hull depth. The only difference is the lower hull sides of the Sea Wind are raised up 1-2". When I drew my North Wind, I didn't think it was worth creating 2 versions so I blended the side shape of the deck and hull so when they meet, they blend to a straight vertical orientation. A builder could add a couple extra strips... straight vertical ... on the lower hull and have a deeper hull version without it looking weird.

It seems a little silly now but it’s bothered me enough to want to post it.

Anyway…. Carry on with previous programming.
