John, To answer your question, My terminology may be off but I refer to a slough as a slow moving, sometimes boggy, sometimes swampy area. As opposed to a stream or creek or river where there is a defined channel. That help? :)

Like you, I may call that boggy part a slough. Also a swale or a swamp.

I like walking them in the winter when they're frozen over. Cardinals are abundant and bright spots of color flying around. Cotton tails are plentiful too.

The bit that had me lost was the mud, bog and marsh. You guys have such a vast variety of waterways, and here was I was thinking of bogs marshes as being muddy as typically found in English or Australian wetlands. Once again thanks for all input.
