Filler for filets

Has anyone used the milled fiber from Raka as a filler. Just wondered what your thoughts would be on it.

"A dense very high strength powdered fiberglass filler of 1/32 inch. For high tensile strength putties and gap filling."

Sounds great with the caveat that you place it very carefully. Anything that much be chipped or sanded away after the cure will not be any fun at all. Wear a good mask when handling and mixing this stuff!!

You can use just about anything to thicken the epoxy to make fillets.

But something like wood flour or glass micro-spheres might make more sense than the chopped glass fiber. The main purpose of a fillet is to get rid of sharp corners and angles, so the differences in strength using different fillers is not worth worrying about.

Wood flour and glass "bubbles" are both much easier to sand and less likely to act as an irritant to the lungs and nasal passages.

If the fillet is not going to be hidden by paint, wood flour looks best, and can be used in smaller amounts to "color" the putty if you decide to use the glass bubbles or even the chopped glass fiber.

I like the wood flour or the glass bubbles , sometimes I combing the two , the glass bubbles make it a lot easier to sand but do lighten the color of the wood flour.

When using either of them ( especially the glass bubbles ) wear a dust mask because they do want to float up in the air as a fine dust.

I'd stay away from them on a small paddle craft.

A little tougher to work with, harder to get smooth, a pain to sand and finish.
