OK mate,

Sounds like it is probably your camera.

Take it back if you can. Something is not right.

I now use a Pentax Optio W30. These cameras are astonishing- 7.1 megapixel, (3X zoom which is just adequate) but where they really shine is in the big screen on the back. They take very good macro and landscape and are waterproof. :D They have their own battery that last for ages. The camera comes with a battery charger. Value for money I think is superb.

Another very good camera is a Fuji SLR look-alike model S5700.
robin has one of these. 7 megapixel and 10X optical zoom. Pic quality is slightly better than the Pentax but the camera is fairly bulky for what it is. It taks 4 AA batteries and can be pretty heavy on them.
Oh yes!!! I love my Pentax Optio
W30 and my Olympus WS720. They both are not only waterproof but will take pictures and video underwater. You don't have to buy batteries and never have to worry about getting it wet.
Check out this video from when me and my friend Nik caught our first tarpons from kayaks. The video is shot with an Optio and some of the stills are shot with my Olympus.

Here's one with some underwater shots. Nik loves making these videos. :D

Paul, check your manual and read up on the file sizes. Alot of the time in digital battery life will depend on in camera file size (jpeg versus bmp, etc...) One reason I'm not much of a fan of digital....

If you bring one of these along, you won't need the camera, and she doesn't need batteries.

Or, try the new, lightweight design, better for backpacking:
