I use the waterproof disposable ones with digital. But, the best bet I've found is to pay someone else for the pictures on disk. that way, I don't have to mess around with the camera and I get in some of the shots.

Both Robin and I use Pentax optio W 30 when yakking. 7 megapixels, 3X optical zoom and most importantly (for us) waterproof and a BIG screen on the back.

prior to them we had little Cannon powershots. Fine cameras.

Robin also likes her Fuji SLR look-alike job. 10 megapixels and 10X optical Zoom but it is pretty bulky.

For me the little pentax does allmost every thing I would want in a dij camera, fits in my pocket and seems to be allmost bullet proof.

Mine are..............
Waterproof one ... Cannon A-1 Sure Shot with panorama and date uses 35 mm film.

Digital .....Kodak Easy Share Z740 , 5.0 megapixels and up to 10 X on the power. ( NOT Waterproof)

There are a ton of the pocket ones out there and several of them are waterproof and digital so no film needs to be purchased or developed. Try Google for Waterproof Digital Cameras.

I have a Pentax Optio 33 WR. Its the older model of what Mick is using. Waterproof and small. It sits in my shirt pocket for quick pictures. I also carry a Panasonic FZ5 that has all the bells and whistles. 5 MP, 12X zoom. Image stabilization. But its not waterproof and stays in a pelican case that mounts to the thwart in front of me.

Have the Pentax Optio 20.

Like it BUT, The zoom function could be better. When using it, it is very hard to get a good pic. The least little movement blurs the pic.

Without the zoom, all pics seam to come out really well.

Digital over film mainly for the ease of use and the amount of pics you can take.

also, after the initial camera cost, the digital pics are MUCH less expensive.

I use a Canon A5 IS because of the 12X optical zoom. Makes quite a difference if you really want close up shots while on the water. Just be sure to use a good waterproof box and secure it when not in use..... I really like the software that comes with the camera, really easy to use and much better than other I have tried out.

Nikon D70 300mm lens for general work. Casio EX-Z850 pocket
camera. Has full manuel control like the Nikon. Fits in shirt pocket
and will take 600pics on a gig card. The Nikon is DSLR and kinda
bulky to carry, but a 300mm lens comes in handy sometimes.
Hell, it's all a tradeoff. Got other lenses, but for wide angle stuff
I just use the little Casio. It does the job as good as the Nikon
within it's limits. Have half a dozen 35mm film Nikons I have
sittin around collecting dust.

Belly B,

Speak to me about your Nikon D40 please mate. Ms Robin is making noises about wanting a Nikon DSLR and a mob here have this one on special at the moment. - specifically, with a 18-55mm lens - any good? what else would she need?

Not BB, but I'm a Nikon fan so a little biased.
Buy it. She'll love you big time. They come with the charger and
a battery. Get a spare battery. I'm not sure but you'll need a
memory card too. That will get her started. Sometimes on e-bay
theres pretty good deals on glass when you want a bigger lens.
