    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

I have built several Uncle Johns Pirogues with 1/8th inch door skins. To regress a bit , my 1st one was with 1/4 luann and came out to heavy for what I wanted. All the others were 1/8th inch door skins. 1st they were butt jointed with glass and epoxy on both sides of the joints , about a 6...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

I would epoxy saturate the wood on each side of the seam. After it cured then lightly sand it , wipe clean with a dry , clean , cloth. Lay down my tape about 1/4 inch on each side of the seam. Then when mixing the epoxy I would add some wood flour ( mine was redwood from the sander when I made...

    The Cajun secret

Customer service does not seam to speedy from them , from what I have read on here. Hopefully the plans will arrive soon so you can start the build. Out of curiosity have you looked at boat plans from Uncle Johns General Store or Matt's at Jem Watrcraft ? Those are two folks I have done...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Pulling the brads with vice grips has to be as much fun as clipping wire stitches and removing them. Especially the ones where the epoxy had cured.

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

LOL... If you are not covered with sawdust when building a boat then you are doing it all wrong.

    Welcome jpirhalla1170

Welcome to the nut house John. I believe you made a smart choice for in laws. :) By the way , Marines don't scare me , I use to scare them. I was Fleet Marine Force and would tell them to open wide after I put them in the Dental chair. ( Navy medic specializing in dental diseases.)

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #4

My best to your bride and a quick recovery. It's no fun having to go for treatments or anything else. I'm looking at surgery on the 28th as a out patient. I spent 2 days last month in the I.C.U. and 3 more in recovery at our local hospital.

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #4

After the boat is made it's the builders responsibility to do all of the research while paddling on the water. Toss in some fishing to make sure the boat is stealthy and does not scare the local residences swimming around under it.

    Shouldered Flare

Normal canoes from a lot of manufactures are what they show as the # 5 , Bubble. #4 " Shoulder Flare " looks more expensive to make but also appears the best one for saving the knuckles of the paddler.

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #4

Looking back when I was younger I had a Gheenoe and to balance it I would place a 5 gallon bucket in the bow filled with water. That way I could sit in the back by the 9.9 Mercury and fish with it being level. That 9.9 Mercury sure made it easy to get from point A to point B. I would cut the...

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #4

Curious to see how she handles which should be just about right. Plus if you get to land a Bass that would make the experience even better. Chuck.

    Grand Banks Dory

The rear seat for rowing when going down stream is ideal when fishing. No matter what folks say I will always think that a trolling motor spooks the educated fish and rowing or paddling sneaks up on them. I have been on bridges ( with clean water below ) and watched the action of fish. A...

    Grand Banks Dory

When I was a kid I had a old Courtney wood boat. It was made from cypress and had a attached set of oar locks. Two oars were the propulsion system for it. I sat on the middle seat when rowing it. My was of doing t was....I would pick where I wanted to go then 180 degrees from that find a land...

    Grand Banks Dory

"A typical one would be 19 1/2 feet long and 5 foot 7" max beam." Modify it for extra stability and then deck a part over and create a one person camping boat. Sort of a poor boy's houseboat for extended fishing trips in the backwaters.

    Build design thoughts?

I paddle the rivers and swamps in Florida so for the most part rocks are not a worry. Stumps and downed trees are the things I have to avoid. For that reason , plus being light weight , I like the Luann or door skins for my boats. I epoxy saturate the wood then glass both sides. I use butt...
