    Best Plywood for UJ Build?

I used Luan from one of the big box stores. One side was "show" grade, I guess you could say, the other side was not - patches and what not. I don't recall finding any major voids to speak of. Scarfing the panels was a bit of a chore, but they came out pretty good. I used a random orbital...

rain and shine at grays creek

Piper - first of all, let me say that I hope your foot is feeling better. When I read this passage, I had a slight sense of deja vu, but not quite. Perhaps it was just a glitch in the matrix. I started shaking the cob webs out of the back of my head. Thinking about the time I paddled out...

    Corrosion, Aluminum/Brass/Stainless Steel

If at all practical, you want to stay AWAY from using dissimilar metals in contact with one another. You run the risk of creating a galvanic cell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion

    Another Brazos Blast

Well, I drove OVER the Brazos last weekend. The San Marco, too. Finally starting to get settled over here. Getting used to the Texas lifestyle. Biggest difference I've noticed so far... the good ole boys are Country Boys vs Bayou Boys where I come from. And yall have rocks here. I'm not...

    Okatoma Creek, Mississippi

I have paddled the Okatoma many times in a canoe and sit-on-top kayak. I've only done day trips, using the outfitter to shuttle my boat upstream and paddle to thier take out. There's no where to camp on the section they shuttle. Maybe further downstream, but I wouldn't know. Summer is...

    Antietam Creek, Maryland

I haven't paddle Kisatchie either, but I seem to recall some kids drowning there last year. They were not good swimmers and under estimated the current and depth of some of the holes.

    Drought in TEXAS

That's amazing. I'll try to bring some rain with me on Friday, but the trailer's gonna be pretty full already.

UJ in swells... and a nice way to close out the weekend

I'm just returning from our family "stay-cation" in Fontainebleau State Park, just down the road from our house, and just adjacent to one of my favorite paddling getaways, Cane Bayou. Last year I brought my aluminum barge Grumman canoe and a plastic sit-on-top. This year, having just finished...

I used red oak from the big box stores on my pirogue and didn't have any problems with epoxy. Used West System epoxy.

    Dream trip

Sea of Cortez 5 - 7 day outfitter supported kayak trip. I got so far as to pricing outfitters and airfare, but I was in night school at the time, so time and money were at a premium for me. I put it on the back burner until I graduated, then got remarried, kids, house, etc... Still a dream...

    Launched my UJ today

Well, now it all makes sense. Reading the Food Value section of this link: You can get fried fish anywhere, I've never known anyone in Louisiana (except Piper) to smoke a fish.

    Launched my UJ today

Didn't know there was more than one kind of mullet. Guess it makes sense that there is. I have no clue. Only thing I know is the mullet around here aren't considered a delicacy, more like a nuisance.

    Launched my UJ today

I officially launched my "new" boat today. I went to Cane Bayou in Lacombe. My usual haunt. Lots (LOTS!) of mullet in the bayou, nearly all the way up to the put-in. Not sure if the Bonne Carre Spillway has anything to do with it, but I've never seen mullet in the bayou although I've heard...

    Uncle John Pirogue

I can finally utter the words: "I built a boat." After nearly two and a half years, I've finished the "six hour canoe." While applying the third coat of varnish on the bottom, I made up my mind that this would be it. Of course, it was the poorest coat of varnish I put on, but oh well. I'm...

The boat build that would never end...

Applied a second coat of varnish on Friday. Coulda gone for #3 today, but I was feeling kinda lazy. :(

The boat build that would never end...

Thanks. I used luan which only had one finished side. I put that side out. The other side was not completely uniform, had some patches. After I glassed the inside, I painted it with Pettit Marine Paint Shipendec (got it on sale from West Marine), color 3303 - Dull Dead Grass. Here's a...
