    New member....questions?

Well my father, who is 60, told me when he was a kid growing up their boats were just built with marine grade glue, exterior plywood and a lot of paint. So you could do without fillets. I would at the least do the fillets on the inside seams of the boat.

    New member....questions?

thylton, Greetings! I've just recently finished building Matt's 14-29 Pirogue. It's really straight forward. I'm 5'10" and 270 lbs myself and so long as I am sitting on the bottom of the boat (and with more seat time to get used to it) everything is stable for the most part. Here's a video...

Got them at West Marine for +/- $4. They're called Clipper Clips by Beckson. I grabbed a 1 1/2" diameter set. I should have gotten a 1" set but so long as I clip the paddle to them on the foam grip it'll stay in place. Search their site for: BECKSON Holding Clips.

Applied 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of exterior latex and added on a few key parts. May have to revisit the drawing board on some of them. Modified a cheap $10 rod holder to screw into my gunwales. I think it's time to update and replace my fishing gear though. I think alot of it is over 20...

    another option in building materials

ditto from the stories my father has told me. When he was a youngin' back in the 50's they didn't have fiberglass wooden boats. It was plywood (marine maybe) paint, glue and varnish.

    Glassed butt joint woops

I understand your frustration with the fraying. I've not found anyway to keep that from happening so I have some odd looking areas of my pirogue where the cloth fingers out. If you wanted to take more time you could tape off an area where the frays end and the unfrayed area begins and add...

Been a busy weekend. Fiberglass tape and small coat of resin is down. going to come back with the glass cloth and cover the entire bottom and crap around the sides as much as possible. should get about 1 or 2 inches overlap on the tape. Also had time to build the UJ chair.

Outwales attached. Did a scarf joint. Not to bad but will still cover it with thin piece of wood to hide it.

(inner) gunwales are installed. I need to get access to an electric planer before I install the outer gunwales. The lumber I used for the gunwales are a pine 1x2 (5/8 x 1-1/2) and when I mocked fitted a 8 foot piece for an outer gunwale I found it an extremely tight fit. Not sure how it would...

    Overnight on Lake Verret

jdupre' I used to fish Lake Verrett with my father and grandfather during the 80's and early 90's when I was a young. I recall the water always being rough out there. Of course this would be out in the middle of the lake and it would appear you stick to the trees and the shore line. I was...
