    Beware the Ides of Tylenol

Let's see. I gotta give up either Tylenol or whiskey. Hmm... OK. That was easy. I'll check the forum again later. I gotta go put some Jim Beam on the rocks. George ps I firmly maintain that a light dash of salt in a cold glass of beer is a fine thing. Got the habit from my father...

    UJ Pirogue w/o Fiberglass

Lot's of threads on building boats with chines / chine logs instead of epoxy fillets and glass. I built my UJ pirogue with chines instead of fillets, using 1/4" plywood for the skin and ripping bevelled strips of mahogany for the chines. I did glass the outside, though. Figured it would take...

    Beer can chicken

Thanks, Jack - that's the kind of sage advice we need geezers around for. :) Now go get a job and pay some taxes so I can collect my check!! George

800 and 1000 year old cedars

Spectacular! I wonder if we ever did have trees like that in our part of the country. Funny how some things grow bigger in the cold parts of the country. Deer for instance - from what I've seen, the whitetails get way bigger in the upper midwest than what we ever see here in Georgia. Trees...

    Beer can chicken

Huh! So it basically works just like a Dutch oven, but huge. That's interesting. There are probably all sorts of pans and containers that could be rigged up that way, so long as the size and shape worked for what you were trying to cook. GBinGA

    Beer can chicken

Got a feeling we are going to talk about zinc poisoning again. Some feel that galvanized metal is dangerous for cooking, others don't. When you set up your trash can cooker, what is the heat source? Do you have a fire or something in the bottom of the can, and put the lid on, or what? I...

    Beer can chicken

I've been lazy about oiling the cooking grill. I'll pay more attention in the future. Probably solve the problem. George

Prototyping a Sit On Top Canoe

Great idea!! I'm going to follow along with this. I'm eager to see how it progresses. GBinGA

    Beer can chicken

How do you keep the skin from sticking to the grill? Grease the grill first? I cook mine all the way upside down. When I take it off the grill, the skin inevitably gets torn up. Doesn't hurt the taste any, but it doesn't look all that cool when I bring it in for carving. :? GBinGA

    glassing bottom on pirogue

Yeah - that's it, exactly. Although some other kind of paper might be just as good or better. The brown paper is just what I keep seeing laying around in the paint department at the home center. Like Steve was saying, MDO, which is just plywood with a paper facing, is what gave me the idea...

    Pirogue repaired

I like the paint job. Did you use some kind of stencil for that? It's a good look. I notice that you have one of those new eco-friendly cars we are hearing about. Doesn't look like it would have very much head room, but I bet the gas mileage is great. GBinGA

    glassing bottom on pirogue

I think of the fabric as being like the rebar and/or rewire in the concrete. Concrete is far from useless without reinforcement, but put some wire or bar in it and you have a big improvement. So what I wonder is whether paper might be a low cost low weight alternative for some of us. Lot's of...

    Chow Chow recipe

I have put salt on watermelon before. Sprinkled a little in my beer from time to time. I also put sugar on grits, and have been known to refer to a can of CocaCola as "pop". Got half-Yankee blood. What can I say. Been living in Georgia since I was 2, but the Northern heritage never...

    Beer can chicken

A friend of mine talked me into getting a ceramic beer smoker - "Sittin' Chicken" - You fill the ceramic mug looking thing with beer or whatever, and put the chicken on it. Tried it once, worked OK. The chicken was indeed pretty, it cooked completely in about four hours at around 275...

    glassing bottom on pirogue

Steve, MDO is exactly what made me think about this to start with. Rosin paper may not be suitable - we'd need to figure out what exactly is in it. Locally, they sell a product called "builders paper" which is essentially the same stuff a brown paper grocery sack is made of, but perhaps a...

    glassing bottom on pirogue

I don't blame you. I haven't been all that eager to try it either, and I've been speculating about it for a while. If it will work on a bow, I bet it will work on a boat. I gotta do an experiment. Been thinking about a combination seat / storage box - that might be a good test. George

    glassing bottom on pirogue

Here are a couple of thoughts; -You said the boat is strong enough, and that what you want to accomplish is to stop the checking of the wood. -The checking of the wood is characteristic of the wood. You used marine fir, if I remember right. It gets cracks and peeled places just like BC pine...
