    Question about stoves

This little feller is a stroke of genius and so is this one, Many of our national parks prohibit all open fires all of the time. either Trangia or Zip stoves are a viable option.

    My Pirogue

G'day Johno, Matt hasn't listed these plan for the P5 regardless of my thoughts on how good she is. This is entirely his call of course and i respect that. I think if you send him an email he would sell them to you. It is a remarkably good boat. G'day Bee. In my opinion, there are many things...

    My Pirogue

Bee, I am not a boat designer and the little I think I know could be completely off target. having said that, I think Ron and I are talking about two very different hull forms. Any displacement hull, as in kayaks and canoes, needs to displace its tonnage as cleanly or as efficiently as...

    My Pirogue

Nice boat Bee, real nice. Well done. I have some thoughts on rocker too, particularly as it applies to pirogues. Even tho I have only built a couple. If I understand the thinking behind the U.J. pirogues correctly, they have around 2.5 inches rocker each end. This achieves a couple of things...

    Question for Hairy

Ron, My Southwind is more like a true kayak than a decked canoe. Low boat signature above the waterline and is superior in strong wind to an open canoe, yet she still has similar load capacity to a canoe. :D Where she falls short is in skinny water where her lack of maneuverability can...

    Question for Hairy

G'day Ron, Sasquatch is 16.5 feet X 33 inches Southwind is 17feet, 9 inches X 28 inches. Sasquatch is a very fast canoe but southwind is noticeably faster. Both are superb boats in their own right and I just don't have enough good words to say about them.

    Question for Hairy

G'day Ron, Good question mate. A rudder is not necessary on this boat. I originally built the rudder as an experiment and was justtoo lazy to be bothered to take it off. When John paddled her at 1770, he never used the rudder and that was good enough for me. The boat tracks like its on rails. :D

G'day Johno, Mate, I haven't used the boatcraft Pacific epoxy so can't really comment on it. I use only West Systems 105 resin and 207 special purpose hardener and swear by it. I get mine from ATL Composites on the Gold Coast and their shipping and handling fees are very reasonable. Scott...

G'day John, Thanks for the very kind words mate. you taught me more than I think you can know on the couple of trips we did. It was my pleasure to share parts of my country with you. I have taken the libety of finding your photobucked album and will post some of your images below. I think...

Cadeppa and Hairies Upper Mary trip. (Belated)

I take the liberty here of posting a sequence of John negotiating a tricky section here just to try to show the level of skill this man has. He was paddling a craft, 17 feet, 9 inches long, with minimal rocker and very limited maneuverability. It is in effect, a sea kayak or a sea, decked canoe...

Cadeppa and Hairies Upper Mary trip. (Belated)

Day 2 dawned foggy with the promise of another great day on the water. I woke bright and early to try for some "arty" shots of the area. Our little camp site. After breakfast, we broke camp and then set off on the second leg of our little trip with the fog lifting. We even tried for some...

Cadeppa and Hairies Upper Mary trip. (Belated)

As the afternoon wore on and we paddled one lovely pond after another, interspersed with lots of small rapids we both began to wonder if we would make the take out before dark. and John continued to impress the hell out of me with his prowess in a canoe that was never designed nor intended...

G'day guys. This is a little late but much has happened here in recent weeks and this is the first opportunity I have had to post. After a few emails and phone calls, John turned up here one morning and after the obligatory cup of tea, we headed off down the Mary Valley for a couple of days...
