Curving the edges on a Pirogue before glassing?

Thanks Mick, That's praise indeed coming from yourself. I was pleased with the filleting. I wanted to keep it as neat as possible. I have splashed a bit with the epoxy but all that does is show up the grain. Once it is all sanded, epoxied and varnished it should look quite pretty. I...

Curving the edges on a Pirogue before glassing?

Thanks Jack, Curved and smooth it will be then (I'm married to the schoolmarm!). 8) Matt, The chap who supplied the epoxy etc builds boats himself and suggested using 50mm (2") tape. He puts two strips down with 30%-50% overlap. This gives a double thickness over the most stressed part of...

Curving the edges on a Pirogue before glassing?

Hi All, I have stuck the bottom on and it looks more like a boat. I masked the seams with brown packing tape as I didn't have any real masking tape to hand and I was too impatient. The results were pretty good (I rounded this with a tongue depressor stick). Even though the tape left...

    rib mounting question

Hi Scooter, Good question (and one I did not even consider). I just glued mine in straight upright.

    Hairies South Wind (Southern Cross)

Jack, Just make sure that you never make them a little boat to say "Thanks". That's what the cobbler and his wife did and the little beggers were never seen again :D

    my first mistake

My wife has suggested that we offer to paint the next one (my wife likes boats and has obviously decided that we won't just build the one!).

Listen Mate, Just slow down will you... - Pile of planks, - Planks tied together, - Hull fared, - Now epoxy saturated. All in a matter of days! It's making me look bad. I just managed to glue the bottom on my pirogue having had the sides joined and rails glued for two weeks (I...

    my first mistake

Hi Friend Bearridge, Looks a little pink while dry, paler tan on the inside. When epoxied it looks great, it is less pink and the grain shows nicely. My bow paddler and crew member (6yr old son) wants to paint it red on the outside. I don't know if we will go that far!

    my first mistake

Hi Scooter, Same deal here mate! I worked out that my workshop space was just over 16'. The trouble is I need to be able to work on the boat so went for just over 14' and cut the sheets down before glueing the butt joints. I still can't decide wether I should have tried for the full...

Stitch & glue question for a pirogue

Hi, I made a stem piece but not as complicated as the UJ design. You can see it in this pic. I had just glued the outer rub rails on at this stage and had left them overhanging (I'll cut them back later). The stems are just bluntly tapered (trapezoidal) blocks. When I'm ready I'll put...

    Epoxy application and cold temps....

G'day Mick, I am really hoping that it will be warm enough to get my outer gunwhales glued on this w/e. Been too darned cold the last couple. Honest it has, the puddles have frozen :(

    Epoxy application and cold temps....

Anyone remember the question.. ok good... :D I wrote this for a UK board but I'll translate it into your funny foreign units for you! As a rule of thumb the reaction speed doubles for every 10 centigrade degrees (18 farenheight degrees) rise in temperature. So if it takes 5 hours to...

Here in the UK 'chippie' also means 'carpenter' (as opposed to a 'brickie' who lays bricks). We also use 'chippie' for a chip shop. An emporium where you can purchase ambrosia in the form of fish and chips. The fish is battered and fried (coated in batter that is not smacked about) and the...

Another One to the Dark Side

Hey Mick that looks beautiful. My six-year old son has been helping saw wood for the pirogue that is taking shape in the workshop at home. The weather cold at the moment so the poxy epoxy takes ages to go off. Have to wait at least a day after each stage, so to do one butt join I have...

Thru-hiking (and any long trips) on the Cheap

Hi, The following is cross-posted from www.songofthepaddle.co.uk: _________________________________________ I have been looking at the excellent folding fireboxes that have been discussed on this site but wondering if I could start with something cheaper for now. I was in Woolworths...

Sloe Gin - Old fashioned country recipe

Hi, Plums, damsons, even heard of prunes in gin (a friends Granny put her logevity down to those!). The Sloes are still at the pretty rough stage - the fruit taste so horrible to start with. It needs more sugar and a few more months to infuse. Should be good by next Christmas! Have to...

    tofu Jerky

Many years ago when I was a grad student I had no money and spent a while living on TVP - very cheap. I lost loads of weight. It is a bit like shredded cardboard. If you add enought chilli powder and stock ubes it tastes like chillied stock cubes!

    Water Purification & Filters

We used to boil water in Iraq, steritabs also work but make the water taste odd. We used potassium permanganate crystals dissolved in water to sterilise fruit (you never know what they've be watered with). Then we were told "the waters fine now" - they lied! When we had recovered, we went...
