    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

I have never built an UJ pirogue but have built without epoxy/glass. The 5mm and 9mm both have exterior rated glue. The three boats I have built using 9mm for the floor and 5mm for the sides are 13" long with floors 24" to 28" wide. They tend to weigh between 40lbs. and 45lbs. I would assume...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

The boat is coming along. When you turn it upside down on the sawhorses its shape is not all that different from some of my boats (wide panel on bottom). Probably tired of me asking questions, but one more please. What size holes do you use for the wire ties/stitches? Will smaller ones work?

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Have the kid do the test. I would not want you to take a dip. Not sure I understand Matt' statement. Sounds correct for initial stability. What happens when the boat is leaned and the volume is reduced?

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

The drawing was fine. Looks like the beam, floor width and depth are similar to some of my builds. It looks stable and I know the design works well for you, but do the tumblehome sides reduce the secondary stability?

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

"predetermined" only in general terms. My last boat was built to very specific dimensions because I was trying to milk all I could from the size and shape. I did reference the last boat's sides as a starting point. The idea for rocker was to keep it between 1" and 2" for each end. It came...

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

I used plywood for the panels and made the splices over the supports. This causes some waste, but is stronger than having the splice between supports.

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Determined the size and height of the TH supports. I also had to install a floor rib/backing over the splice. When making the scarff joint I discovered a void and had to convert to a butt joint.

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Made the stem pieces out of 3/4" stock to save weight. Did not work because it split when nailing in place. Careful grain orientation may prevent this. I just made new ones from 2X4 and cut away excess wood. They worked better with only a few ounces of weight gain. Pictures out of order. I...

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Installed the chine logs. They are sawed 32 deg. to flair the sides enough. After drying they have to be planned/sanded level to fit the floor.

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Started this pirogue a few weeks ago. This is the last day I will have with a computer for a while that I can post pictures from. I'm going to try to post some by groups, at different times today and will be able to comment on them latter. Chuck if this is not suitable please delete them and I...

    The Cajun secret

Why not both? Seriously either would be interesting. The Glades Skiffs design seems to be more specialized. It is used for polling in a shallow marsh environment. The upswept bow of the skiff may also present a more challenging build. The pirogue should be more versatile and a more...

    The Cajun secret

I can't help you about getting the plans but welcome to the site. I think Duck Calls and Podnus both had some delays getting their plans. Sounds like the site is a little too optimistic. Have you tried contacting them again? Pleas post about your build. I like the design and am looking...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Anytime on the measurements is fine. I have found that strips (for my tumblehome panels) that are bead and coved experience less "do overs" and stay aligned better than just edge gluing. They do take more time and tools to make so it may not be worth it to you. Seem to remember Ron (Tx. River...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Questions if you have the time. How much "V" is in the bottom / how far below "flat bottom" is it? The bottom side panel is how wide/tall? The next one? How tall are the forms and is this the depth of the boat?

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

The build is progressing nicely. I like the glue bottle guide for the strip edges.

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

I thought that might be how you could do it. Ripping strips on the table saw works best with two people, at least for me. I can make it work using my adjustable rollers on stands but even that goes much smoother with help.

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

I like the idea of the jig and not needing help cutting the strips on the table saw. I don't mean to distract from the boat but how you do cut the last strips when there is little board left to support the saw?

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

Welcome "J" to the board. I'm glad someone is building. Nice looking boards. Clear cedar is hard to find over this way. Is the wooden saw guide adjustable or would you need another one for different size strips?

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #4

Took the boat to the bayou today for its first trip and slimming. Only caught one white bass, but that counts for slimming. I was able to sit behind center and keep my fishing rods in front of my seat. The bow seemed to be just touching the water or maybe only a little above. The boat tracked...

How Much Will My Boat Weigh?

The last two boats I built had floors 12' long X 28" widest beam and were 9mm luan. Using the weights posted above the floors would have weighed 9.52 lbs. Using 5mm they would weigh 6.72 lbs. The 5mm would need glass and epoxy to be strong enough. Using weights for fiberglass and resin...
