After a little over a year, doing another one....My 11th SOF...
Another fishing boat, only this is for a 265 lb. person.....

I am tweaking the plans I used for mine, increasing the beam by 14% about 4'' from 27'' to 31''

Gerald's Challenger....I'll call it the XL

This is what I have as of yesterday,,,,,,,,,,,,
This boat is for a friend who is in his 70's and has one of those 12' plastic Bass Pro tuperware boats....So I made up my mind to build him a real one. Even one he can take his little dog.....



Progress...Mapping out 2 forms in the 4' space for and aft of the center form is a challenge..

I decided since he doesn't have a place to store it at home, but maybe in his store in his work area hoisted to the ceiling.....

I am making it like a canoe. Could even be a tandem if removable seats are incorporated....
8' cockpit length....frames are 24'' apart....boat is 16'

The rudder assembly is removable..The way it works, you move the lever to the direction you want to turn..

From the back I may remove the 2 eye screws and just place one in the center to tie off ......

WM, I'm guessing that:
1. The rudder is retractable?
2. There are plans for drilling or cutting lightening holes?
And, I'm inquiring about what you used for lashing?

Your rib and longerons look like wing and fuselage construction used in skin-on-stick aircraft.
And, as Mike observed, nice job!

Jack, The rudder is retractable, and the lashing is waxed nylon sinew...
The cutting of the frames is described in Jeff's first book...

Going with the heavier stuff this time...
POLYESTER 11.6 oz. plain weave * 77" wide

This fabric is tough, you can pull the thread really tight and it doesn't separate the weave..
This time doing a different stitch, the double corded stitch.....

What ever fabric is used, the hands get tired from pulling and tugging to get wrinkles out......
The bow end done, the whip stitch is down the front of the hull....

This is as far as I got yesterday before my hands, neck,shoulders gave out, just have to finish up the stern and trim the inside of the gunnels...

I like to see the lines of a boat. Looking at a bare frame is actually seeing the real version of a line drawing for a hull. Ever look at a picture of a viking lapstrake hull head on? Beautiful as a woman.
