My daughter needed a paddle. So I had some scrap wood and took a few months and built one for her.

The shaft is ash.

The two strips on the blade are cherry

The dark wood on the shaft is mahagony

and the handle is a combination of ash, cherry and mahagony chunks.

I glued the wood together with Titebond III wood glue. Once it was all set, I planed away everything that was not a paddle. Once again, my favorite plane is a little thumb plane. You can feel little bumps and ridges when you have that plane in the palm of your hand.

The blade shape is based on my trusty Grey Owl.

The blade is wrapped in 3.25 oz glass set in epoxy. Then the rest of the paddle is covered in 3 coats of spar varnish. I am not happy with the finish and may add three more coats of varnish.

Next project is my pirogue. I have a new router/ table and am working on the ribs now.

till next time!

That is one nice looking paddle and the idea of wrapping it (the blade) in glass will keep it good looking for a long time.

Now you need to make one for yourself and , naturally , have a pirogue to paddle it with. Matching the boat and paddle , a hand crafted custom outfit.
