Made a short paddle Sunday morning on Bayou Manchac with my buddy Marland. He wanted to try out his new pirogue. He used my pirogue as hs pattern . 16" long with 25" bottom . He built one about a year ago on the same pattern but he really overbuilt it- about 60 lbs.. He added much more lumber than needed for ribs and gunnels. On this one, he wanted to see how LITTLE extra lumber he could use(except for the 4 lbs of carry handles) . It came out about 43 lbs.
He used two sheets of 5.2 mm luan, 5/8" x 1 1/8" cypress for the gunnels and chines and a little bigger pieces for the two bottom and 4 side ribs, yellow glue and brass screws. He's got maybe 50 bucks in the boat. It's a fine craft for occasional use.
Two well-loved and muddy pirogues.
