Yes, Derek Hutchinson is the grandfather of British kayaking, or, sea canoeing, as they call it. He literally wrote the book (many books) on kayaking. You have to take it with a grain of salt, though, as he takes credit for some things that, perhaps he figured out himself, but that others were already doing, like the watertight bulkhead in fiberglass kayaks.

Of note in that video is Derek's opinion that one does not need to dress for immersion when paddling in very cold water, as you will be dead before you can be rescued. Roll-or-die is the philosophy. That's typical of elite British paddlers too, from what I understand.
