I'm sure all you Dutch Oven Gordon Ramseys have tried this. We do this one at scouts fairly often. It's a good selling feature to the parents of new kids.
Dutch Oven
Briquets
1 box cake mix (usually the kind that doesn't require eggs).
1 jar/can apple pie filling
1 can root beer
Mix the cake mix with the apple pie filling in the Dutch Oven. Pour in the root beer and stir again, but not as thoroughly.
Use 8 briquets underneath and 7 on the lid. (25 deg per briquet). Cook until done, but not burnt.
Not quite as elegant as the pineapple upside down cake, but just as tasty.
The other thing I like to do is cook a pork roast in the DO. Sear the roast on all sides.
Season. Put in the DO with a can of root beer and let it cook for several hours.
I've done this at a winter camp on the snow. The toughest part was keeping the temperature high enough.
