You believed me?
I'm flattered that you took my estimate of 10 pounds as gospel. You need to distrust crusty old engineers more ;-).
I didn't do an extensive amount of work on the estimate. I figured how many strips it would take and sort of added stuff up. I didn't take into account any...
What else do I have to do?
So I did a calculation based on the approximate volume of wood in your canoe. It looks like the weight difference between cedar and cypress will be somewhere close to 10 pounds. Not a lot. However, that assumes that the cypress you have is around 32 pounds per...
Here's a couple of pictures of my future 16' canoe. There's already several things I found that would make the build a bit better than the instructions from Compumarine. Not complaining, just being picky. I've written them up and can post them if anyone's interested.
I'm working off Mylar...
There's the solution
Kayak Jack, that's exactly what's needed. A GPS (for accurate speed), a boat with a trolling motor (for consistent speed), a good fishing scale and a couple of different canoes. I'm a long ways from wetting my project, but when it's done I think I'll do some experimenting.
Area and drag
A boat has to displace all the water in it's cross sectional area. Shape is very important, but not as important as the amount of water you have to move out of the way. Longer water line implies you can skim on top of the water instead of pushing it to the sides.
Fish can...
Asymetric stripper
This is my first post to the forum. As my first project I'm building a 16' canoe, plans from Compumarine. I'm interested in any experience or comments about this very asymetric design. If there's no experience out there I'll post my impressions when I'm done, probably in...
