    The Cajun secret

Glad to hear everything worked out. When I interacted with them during my build, they were very helpful. Just a couple notes my build... marine grade plywood (I used okoume) was hard to find and expensive. You could use other, more readily available wood as long as it doesn't have voids, but...

    The Cajun secret

Got and responded to your message MS Duck Calls but I'm going to post here as well. The Cajun Secret people were very responsive at first but then stopped replying after my 3 or 4th email. I'm not sure what happened. Worst case scenario, you should get the digital file too. You can have a local...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

Part of the reason I'm fishing for feedback here is to learn from people that already had problems so I don't have to have them too! I'd classify myself as resourceful but some may call me a cheat! When following the "Cajun Secret" pirogue plans, we ran in to an issue bending the chine logs...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

I agree. Our first builds gave us some experience with what gets used and what doesn't. We had enough foresight (and extra wood) to elevate a portion of the floor in the back to create an "aft" box for keeping things dry (we didn't put running boards like the "cajun secret" plans suggested)...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

The bayou skiff is definitely a strong contender on the list. We actually considered cutting the end of one of the pirogues off to create a flat transom but we were worried this would have compromised the structural integrity of the entire boat. We could potentially square off the front and...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

We used marine grade paint (Duralux "Pirogue Green") on our 'rouges but after beaching, portaging, and dragging them through sand, rocks, sticks, etc. we've noticed considerable paint removal from the bottom. Many cajun pirogue owners will tell you that you'll end up having to repaint your...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

The cajun secret pirogue plans called for running boards for the same purpose but the 3/8' okoume was substantial enough. I think we are leaning towards using the lightest, thinnest ply that we can get away with since we navigate waters that dont have that many rocks or hard objects to hit. Not...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

For simplicity sake, It will be a displacement hull but a semi-planning hull would be sweet. I can totally envision a shallow hard chine (think modified V hull on a pirogue) but unfortunately we're only Cajun engineers, so that might take a few more boats to warm up to. Any suggestions regarding...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

We are def. going to be walking a tight rope with regards to transportability while incorporating all of the ideas that we have. I think the main reason I want to marginally increase the length, width, and side wall height is to make it a little more "capable" of standard fishing/hunting...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

This is why I knew posting here would be a good idea. Sometimes its hard to see the big picture when approaching a project with a novice's eye! We may taper and slightly rake the stern like the pirogue but then truncate the breast hook or great a transom "bracket" to keep the lines and reduce...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

I've never tried stitch and glue but my friend and I have considered it. I've even considered a CNC pre-cut kit but still a little too pricey and less original. Luckily my friend is a skilled carpenter and has a lot of knowledge and most importantly....tools. He also installs furniture on boats...

Built a pirogue, now on to bigger plans

My name is George and I've recently joined this forum to get advice and suggestions on my next build. My friend and I built a couple of pirogues in Lafayette using the "Cajun Secret" plans and would now like to build a slightly wider and longer boat with a flat back transom to accommodate an...
