No mast step when we got it, but It could have been removed, rotted out , or whatever. You don't need muchofa mast step for a 1 1/2" mast anyway. Probably a pretty small sail, the guy was likely only trying to get a little relief from paddling
About four years ago, friend Keith and I were involved in patching up a 100 year old stripper pirogue. It was built on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain with 3/4" X 3/4" strips, edge nailed with square nails - way before epoxy and glass. Anyway it had this funny little seat in the front with...
don't think of it as a mistake
it's an opportunity to work on the top cuts of the sides and finalize the shape of the finished boat
looking good so far............
3 or 4 inches of freeboard is plenty as long as you're on flat water. Going out in the surf or paddling with water skiers is a different story
as a kid, i spent time in a small boat that, if you reached down to grab the top rail, your fingers would get wet
just for clarification, 35 degrees...
looking good and looks like you're getting close to what you want
just my 2 cents -- looks like a lot of rake (or cut back) on the ends, maybe 45 degrees or 12 on 12? Decrease that cut back to 6 on 12 and it'll get you another foot of boat length in the water. That part of the boat that's...
"Understand about two jigs giving a fairer curve, but I have to ask, when using two like that, should they both be not quite as wide as a single jig would be? Instinct tells me that would be true, otherwise I'd expect a straight line between the two jigs, and don't think the wood would let that...
I've got all that we took during that build
Be happy to burn you a DVD of them and any other pics you might want
Easier to do that than try to resize and send via email
PM me your address and I'll get it in the mail next week
don't know how you're planning on laying out the cuts, but two sheets of plywood is plenty unless you're bumping around 16' long and much wider than a 24" bottom.
of course you have to be able to cut close to the line :D
as i understand it, the main difference between marine ply and a good...
Chine logs are not necessary on plank boats but are needed to provide nailing area for plywood boats as edge nailing into plywood doesn't hold very well
Typically the chine on a marsh pirogue is on the inside and the chine on a swamp pirogue is on the outside. The reasoning is that on the...
The plans listed are for a swamp pirogue. A swamp pirogue pirogue has ribs, 26 degree side flare and about 4" of rocker
A marsh pirogue has no ribs, 35 degree side flare and very little rocker
Those are the major differences. Send me a PM and I'll send you the missing pictures as best as I...
Always interested in old cypress
Finding is easy, getting it out is where the work is
If you're lucky it will float, unfortunately you won't find out until you get it in deep water
The other thing that most folks don't realize is that epoxy isn't exactly mother's milk.
Some people already have or will develop a chemical sensitivity with continued exposure - particularly to the hardner.
Kind of like poison ivy, some folks are affected right off, other folks get affected...
That's a good starting point. But it depends on the side flare and and the amount of rocker you want to end up with.
for a given side flare, more arc gives less rocker and less arc gives more rocker
for a given arc, more flare gives more rocker and less flare gives less rocker
to help you...
thanks Jack,
i didn't weigh it but it's got probably half the wood as a plank pirogue plus the weight of the expoxy and glass that was added. It was lighter but still not a featherweight.
Building it took considerably longer than just building a "three board plank" pirogue. Cutting and...
I built one a couple of years ago
Istead of making flat, rectangular panels and cutting the panel to shape, I made the panels pretty close to the final shape and avoided wasting too much wood
here's a shot at one side
here's the pirogue in progress
and here it is finished
It's not an...
if your side flare is around 35 degrees, reduce the swag about 1 1/2" to maintain rocker
if your side flare is around 25 degrees, reduce the swag by about 1/2"
keep in mind that this is only a guideline and rocker can be changed lots of other factors like bottom width, side flare, amount of...
