    Build design thoughts?

I will make a bet. I bet no matter which way you go and build the boat you will find ways to improve it when you paddle it. Boats are like potato chips , one just is not enough or right , the next will be even better. The seats are the same way. Take a look at the seat I designed for my use...

    Build design thoughts?

Good question since the normal Pirogue has a wide open area. My bet is he was thinking about how a Canoe is made and paddles. Especially the way the folks paddle one up in the North Woods when kneeling. Always looked uncomfortable to me since I like to sit and paddle.

    Build design thoughts?

WOW .....Those are some loaded questions. I would say it all depends on what you like and are comfortable with. You are building it and this way it will be made for you. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Myself I like a narrow boat since they make the paddling a lot easier. I like to...

    Wood Grain Orientation

The extra support of the backing would be an improvement by increasing the strength of the wood.

    Smelly Wood

Only wood that ever smelled to me was pine or cedar when it was cut.

Ian--How are you doing down there?

Chuck ( oldsparkey ) here. Sunday 10/02/22 ( High Noon ) just now the Broadband and Phone came back on. The central part ( Orlando area ) had between 2 to 3 feet of rain. My area all the lawns had standing water and other's were flooded. Lots of streets were shallow rivers and the real rivers...

    Fall kayak attire?

Basically I wear the same thing all year long. Shorts or slacks with zip off legs. A long sleeve shirt with a high sun block rating. If I'm camping , in camp ( off the water ) it's a T Shirt. Crocks and a Tilly Hat. When a cold front comes ( about 5 days a year ) a long sleeve flannel shirt...

    The Cajun secret

I'm sort of partial to the one I designed back in 2003. Chuck........... https://www.southernpaddler.com/community/threads/a-comfortable-pirogue-boat-seat-ya-can-make.283/

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue #3

That's one sharp looking boat. As far as the seating you can always counter balance it with the fish you catch. I can't think of any reason why no self respecting fish would not want to be seen n that boat. Now we just might know your secret to catching all those fish.

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

    The Cajun secret

Like most things in life it's not hard when done right , can be a real pain when done wrong. Wasn't that a lot of help .... ;):rolleyes:o_O One thing it does do , adds a lot more $$$$ to the cost and additional time in making the boat. There are steps to the process that needs to be followed...

    The Cajun secret

It's a shame you aren't glassing it. Those knots in the wood would make an interesting look when finished.

Sources for 3.5 oz tight weave?

All I ever used was the 3.5 tight woven from Larry at RAKA. I googled " tight woven fiberglass cloth " and had a lot of different suppliers come up. Best to take a look since there are a few different ones. Unless anyone on here knows of a different supplier and is using them. Happy Hunting .

    The Cajun secret

Yep , bottoms really help a boat to float. ;)

    The Cajun secret

Why not match the bottom to the same wood that's in the sides ? Or use a good marine grade board that's waterproofed since the bottom gets the most wear and tear of any part. I'm working under the assumption you are going to paint the boat and not epoxy and glass it.

    New Toy's.

Well I got myself some new toy's. Things are getting weird around here and I'm thinking the bear spray I carry needs a new friend. A Browning 3/4 length 1911, 22 long rifle caliber pistol has been it's previous buddy Lately a lot of the stray or outside cats have been vanishing and I have seen...

    Trim/Rocker

The Sasquatch 14 x 30 by Jem handles differently then the 16 Pirogue from Uncle Johns. The Pirogue will turn on a dime and give you 9 cents in change. My Sasquatch will track a lot better and is ideal for cruising down river. As far as turning on the dime , closer to getting 4 cents back. It...

    How Often/How Long?

I like to sit just back of the center line ( Balance point ) of the boat with my legs in front of it. This way the bow is slightly higher then the stern. Loading the weight is evenly distributed between the stern area and the bow. This leaves the center section for myself. I know that neither...
