    Rails

Hmmm... So I seem to be going down the rabbit hole.... On my way to pick up my 4mm okoume from the freight terminal I stopped to pick up some 2x4s to stiffen the load on my roof rack, While there I saw a nice piece of cedar that should make some nice rails with a bit of scarfing. It is...

    Pirogue Fly Fishing

Good thoughts. I have done some spin fishing from a canoe in mild whitewater and handling the boat was a real handful while trying to fish. I did that with two nervous dogs along once and it was really crazy :) I plan to use the the pirogue in still and moving flatwater so a tiny anchor might...

    Pirogue Fly Fishing

Thanks for the tips. I don't know a lot about the fishing here in the Big Bend area. I know we have some river fishing, lakes and some salt water and brackish. I am sure we have bluegill, crappie, and sea trout. I don't know if we have mangrove snapper, I am guessing they are more on the...

    Pirogue Fly Fishing

I am thinking about doing some fly fishing when my pirogue is done. I have not fished in a few years and have not fly fished a lot even then. I really enjoyed fly fishing for trout when backpacking in the Sierras, but that is really the extent of my experience. I am self taught using youtube...

About those fiberglass butt joints. . .

I haven't built a boat in years, but have done a variety of methods of joining sheets. I found that butt joining and using glass worked just fine and was easy to do. Planing scarfs was harder to do but also worked fine. I recently tried masking a fixture for an old circular saw for cutting...

    Rails

I am definitely not looking for something that is hard to load on the roof rack. I am getting too old to be loading excessively heavy boats. I hope I can keep this one reasonably light. A 105# boat would be a huge fail for my usage. I think I'd probably sell it or give it away if it came in...

    Rails

Western red cedar would be light and pretty strong, but require care as far as how much abuse it is given as far as abrasion and other trauma. I'd love to have some Sitka spruce but sourcing that here would be even harder than sourcing decent plywood. I'd probably need to have it shipped from...

    Tenkara Rods

Back to tenkara... I loved the idea of it and tried it a little without much luck. I thought the idea was especially great for backpacking. I packed it for a backpacking trip in the Sierras, but on the way there bought a regular 4 piece fly rod outfit a Cabelas on a whim. I tried it out at a...

    Rails

For sure . The question is how much is needed with the 4mm Okoume. I was surprised at the suggestion of 3/8 x 3/4 thinking more was typical. After hearing it and thinking about it it doesn't sound unreasonable.

I don't plan for it to be anything fancy, but hopefully it will be competently built.

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I did, but it isn't all it is cracked up to be. Hobby businesses want to become full time businesses and take over your life in my experience. That or they don't take off at all. I am retired and want to be retired. I have had to work at tamping down business and actively hide from potential...

    Rails

Thanks, 3/4 x 3/8 is less than I was thinking. It would be great to keep the weight down though. I am building with 4mm so obviously minimizing weight is one of the goals, but does the 4mm need any extra support at the rail. I am guessing no, but asking anyway. Thinking how light that...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

No turning back now! The 4mm has been ordered and should be here on Monday! With shipping it seems like a small fortune, but this a hobby so I might as well just chalk it up to the enjoyment I get from the project. When you compare it to lots of other hobby stuff I could spend on (shop...

    Rails

What kind of lumber have you guys used for rails on your pirogues? I am ready to shop. Options I have easily available: 2 x whatever select SYP. They have some pretty 16' select SYP at the local Lowes in sizes from 2x6 to 2x12. I could pick a clear or mostly clear piece and have the rest...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

They don't have anything :( From another source with expensive shipping, 4 mm is available, cheaper, and would save a lot of weight. I may go that route. I kind of wanted to and needed a nudge.

Well, I have a local lumber dealer who says his distributer lists 6mm BS1088 okoume as something he can order. He says he will check if it is really available and will call me back with a quote if it is. My fear is that his supplier might be Woodford Plywood who told me they do not have any 1/4".

    Fillets

Thanks for the clarifications. One key point that I missed was that you weren't taping the seams.

    Fillets

It has been years since I have done fillets so I was reading a little as a refresher. I saw suggestions here that were very different from what I remember. I saw a suggestion of using masking tape, then applying epoxy with a syringe, then forming the fillet with a credit card before allowing...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I talked to Boat Builder Central and they quoted me a slightly cheaper shipping price. I have not decided whether to bite the bullet on the expensive shipping or make the trip and combine it with some tourist activities, but I'll get the plywood by the 20th or so either way.

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Well the last potential local source on my list says "no dice". They are a wholesaler so they might not have sold to me anyway but they didn't have anything in 1/4" or 4, 5, or 6 mm. He said they had some 1/2 marine plywood. I didn't bother to find out what kind of wood it was. I am now...
