A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

It looks like lots of rain today and probably in the upcoming several days so I am not sure when I will cut plywood. I need to open the rollup door and work at least partially exposed to the weather when breaking down full sheets if I want to use the table saw. If I get impatient I could use...

    Gluing rails on

I think I'll be able to just skip them, but if not, I'd probably set and putty.

    Gluing rails on

They are nearly impossible to pull without really mutilating the surface in my experience. They are available in stainless steel. I am thinking that I won't need to use them, but will pop one or two in place if I see a need. That said, my expectation is that just clamping will be adequate...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Thanks. That makes sense. I did some measuring and some moving of benches and machines. Ripping first also looks like it will be easier for the way the space is working out. So between the two factors it is looking like a slam dunk. There is an intrusion into one corner of the work space...

    Adhesives

I wonder if the tan powder you mentioned was the same or similar stuff. I don't recall ever working with any that was tan.

    Adhesives

Yes my recollection is that it required good joinery. No gap filling. No fillets. Within those restrictions I recall it being nice stuff to work with. I recall that some complained about the colored glue lines. I thought they were pretty, at least with some wood.

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

It may depend on how much I manage to free up indoor space vs moving things in and out of the shop to work I need to do, but... I am considering how to do the ply scarf cutting and glue up. Given the layout of the UJ pirogue parts I am considering just scarfing the two whole sheets together...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Too late for that, but they are flexible enough to comply to the curves of my canoe without a huge struggle so I don't think they will be a problem to fit up on the gentle curves of the UJ pirogue. Fingers crossed. Funny thing... Despite having really straight almost all vertical grain they...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

A quick update... I have some new frames built of some nice cedar ( I set aside some heavier ones that I made earlier). I have some rails scarfed to length of the same nice cedar. If the weather is decent enough I will open the rollup door and the kitchen door so I can feed the long lengths...

    Adhesives

I remember using some red-ish colored powder that was mixed with water. If memory serves we called it red resorcinol or something like that. I may be wrong but I think it may have said weldwood on the can. The glue line was dark purple-ish red. We thought it was great stuff at the time. I...

    Thanks guys. Very helpful.

    Gluing rails on

I have put rails on a variety of boats but always with either using fasteners or fasteners and glue. I know that for many gluing jobs there can be a problem with the clamped pieces creeping during clamping or after they are clamped, but before the glue (epoxy) dries. Given that, I was...

    Adhesives

Maybe, but not something I'd consider. Yeah, assuming no water intrusion (maybe not always a good assumption?).

    Adhesives

Good info. I knew most of it, but how to apply it in our context is another matter. I have used 3M 5200 in my years of sailboat ownership. Nasty stuff to work with and clean up. Tough as nails. Conventional wisdom was never use it on anything you would ever want to take apart again. One...

    Adhesives

Okay so I am guessing it probably makes sense to use epoxy to glue stuff in boat building. The thing is that I hate mixing up tiny batches of epoxy. Is it reasonable to use wood glue in gluing up stuff like scarf joints, half lap joints in frames, and so on. I have often just used Titebond...

    Rails

I wonder whether any average is at all meaningful when it probably represents a pretty extreme range of values, There are probably some that are nearly daily and some that approach or reach zero days per year. Also these extremes may be the same person at different points in their life. At...

    Rails

As I get older it becomes more important every year. I do agree that it doesn't over ride all other factors. That said my canoe is pretty heavy and I really do not mind all that much, but it sure would be nice to have a boat that is really easy to throw on a tall vehicle or to carry longer...

    Pirogue Fly Fishing

I wear the "valet key" on a lanyard around my neck and leave the regular key at home most of the time. Same for mountain biking and some other activities.

    Rails

Yeah, that is what it comes down to I guess. I do find myself second guessing not using parts that I already made, also using 6 ounce glass on a boat where I am skimping on ounces everywhere else, but that is what my gut is telling me to do.

    Pirogue Fly Fishing

Yes it is some incredibly beautiful country. I have spent a little time there, but not as much as I'd like. I bicycled from San Diego to Reno camping along the way self supported. I did some backpacking in the John Muir Wilderness and Yellowstone. I briefly passed through when bicycling from...
