A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I got a surprise when I weighed the pirogue this morning. I wondered how much weight it gained with the latest work I had done. My guess was that it would be 2-3# heavier now after painting. I lost track of what epoxy work and sanding was done since it weighed in at 30#. I was expecting...

    Waterproof Glue

Not sure what this stuff is. My impression is that it is similar to Liquid Nails and other similar construction adhesives. If that is the case, what I have read wasn't very positive for use in boat building. I think there were complaints that the liquid nails type products don't penetrate...

I couldn't resist sanding the bottom again and putting on another coat when I was doing the sides. The brush marks are pretty much gone. The whole outside of the boat is now olive drab. It looks good to my eye. BTW, the paint does look more olive drab and less hunter green than I initially...

    Isn't that the truth.

Marley doesn't have her own bivy and mine isn't big enough for the the two of us. When we both go I usually take a small tent. I find a one man tent big enough for the two of us.

You could call it that. I have a nice 5.3 ounce bug bivy that I use for backpacking or bike touring. Also a 7 ounce and a 12 ounce tarp that I have use either of to sleep under when backpacking or bike touring. Either would nicely supplement the shelter the pirogue offers if the weather was...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I found that this paint goes on nicer with a foam roller. I sanded the bottom lightly with 220 grit to get rid of the brush marks before applying a second coat with the roller. On hind sight I could have sanded a bit more aggressively because I didn't completely remove the brush marks, there...

Maybe, but it seemed fairly thin already. It didn't seem like it needed thinning to me, but perhaps did given that the brush marks didn't flow out. I does seem to be lying flatter as it dries, not without brush marks but flatter. Not sure if it is as good as it will get at this point. There...

I sanded the bottom and put on a coat of the Hunters Specialties Camo Paint. The olive drab is a prettier color than I expected. It is almost more hunter green than olive drab to my eye unless it dries to a different color when fully dry. I hope it dries to a smoother finish than it looks...

The outside has been hardening for several days so I'll start there

What I hope is the last coat of epoxy went on the pirogue this afternoon. Tomorrow the real sanding starts I guess. Since it is all sealed I could go for a test paddle first though and just might. I haven't decided how much sanding I will do. It would be a functional boat and not terribly...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

All of the glass is on and wetted out with epoxy. The floors need another coat of epoxy, the inside sides need to be sealed, and there is plenty of sanding to be done before painting, but once everything is sealed I may go for a test paddle. That should be in just a few days. I am really...

    Foam Brushes

I tried cutting a chip brush so the bristles were as you describe and used it for wetting out cloth this morning. It worked great. It was a huge improvement, especially on what was a fairly lousy chip brush to start with. Thanks for the tip. I suspect the brushes would be better all around...

    Rocker, length

Ah, okay. When I was thinking model I was thinking much smaller. I think my first model was 1" = 1' or 1/12 scale and the next was 1.5X that big. I can see a real advantage to your large models in that you can really get decent measurements off of the model. I wouldn't have space to keep the...

    Rocker, length

How big of a model do you typically build? I'd think that with luan or masonite it would need to be fairly large given the thickness of the materials, unless you have access to some quite thin stuff. I built a couple models just for fun before committing to starting my pirogue, but didn't...

I wonder what folks are doing for deck plates or breast hooks on pirogues similar in construction to an UJ pirogue. Options I see for mine: Nothing, the little Christmas tree shaped stem is good enough. A piece of 4mm ply on top of the rails. It would likely be bent to a curve rather than...

    Foam Brushes

They are a cheap brush that I once read were made for machinists to brush chips off of their work. Not sure if that is true or not. They tend to shed, but I find I can pre shed out the loose bristles. They are made with natural China bristles that will hold up to epoxy, glue, resin, stain...

    Foam Brushes

I have been using a crude method this morning and using a nitrile gloved hand followed by a foam roller once the cloth was mostly saturated and stuck down well.. It worked surprisingly well. I was having trouble with anything else moving the cloth too much on the inside floor sections. I did...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Yeah, it was a good point to make. I come from a whitewater kayaking background so I have the habit of wearing a comfy pfd all the time when in small craft. We did use seat cushions as a throwable devices sometimes on sailboats when I used to sail, but if the coast guard caught you sitting on...

I don't rely on it as a pfd. I always wear a pfd vest. I might throw the cushion if someone needed an assist, but otherwise to me it is just a cushion.
