Ultralight Aluminum "Skin on Frame" canoe

Hi all. I've been thinking about that post/thread where the guy made the 17 pound pirouge. He used aluminum trim coil/flashing for the sides. Had to go to Lowe's the other day so I thought I'd swing by and look at the stuff. A 14 inch wide by 50 foot long roll was pretty light (6.5 pounds I...

Friends five day trip on the Apalach

Just wanted to post about a friend of mine's 5 day/4 night "adventure" on the Apalachicola. One determined dude. And let's just say he ain't no spring chicken, which between that and the headwind and whitecaps and surf and distance makes is all the more impressive. The report (and many other...

    Homemade Boat Rack for Pirogue

One thing to consider. If your big boat is going to tow your small boats behind it, you really can't go faster than the "hull speed" of the smaller boat that is being towed behind. Hull speed (in knots) being something like 1.4 times the square root of the boat length in feet. Hull speed is...

    Florida Pirogue/dory

Hey Zip thats one cool looking vessel you have there. I myself have been dreaming of powering a small boat with a trolling motor, but the significant other wasn't going to let me drop several hundred on even a cheap trolling motor and deep cycle battery, so I've just been dreaming for years. But...

    the strip Toto

Yeah, me too! :( These guys are startin to make me mad. All these beautiful boats. And I think they get them done in just a weekend (two tops). Me, on the other hand, will take a year to make something that looks like it was made by a half blind drunk monkey with a very limited budget...

    Intro and new boat build

In my amateur opinion that frame is pretty heavy duty. Probably more than it needs to be. My 21st Century kayak kit is pretty similiar in shape and size to that boat and it appears to my eye to be significantly less heavy duty. Thats not to say my kit isnt heavy duty enough. If anything, I say...

    Intro and new boat build

I have a 21st century kayak SOF kit I am working on. Here's how it works on theirs. The boat shape is defined by two things. Stuff that runs fore/aft like the keel, the gunwales, the chine stringers and the deck stringers. Those are held in place and given their shape by various ovaloid shaped...

    Mini Benny Kayak

Hey guys, Here is a pretty little kayak built in pirogueish style. He give all the important dimensions and basic instructions for building so if you are either a generally handy person or have done some epoxy boat building before it should be all you need. Wonder how much it weighs...

    round are hard chined hulls.

Take a pirogue with slanted sides. Take a canoe that has a mostly flat bottom but rounded sides. Make them the same size. It seems to me the canoe almost HAS to have better secondary stability. When tilted far enough, the canoes rounded sides are going to provide more bouyancy further from the...

    Is Poplar any good?

Hi all. Another question in my quest to finish my skin on frame kayak. There are a couple of places in the boat where I would like to strengthen the frame. These are also places where it would be nice if the wood surface was well rounded rather than flat. I have a couple of nice straight 1...

    Brass, stainless, something else?

Thanks guys. Lots of good input there. Its brass then. And I'll make sure to use brass screws in there as well.

    Brass, stainless, something else?

Hi all. Working on a skin on frame kayak. At the bottom of each frame/bulkhead I want to epoxy in some nuts or short sections of threaded rod coupler. This will allow me to secure a floor and or foam floatation to the bottom at some later date if I so desire. If they arent being used, I just...

    Update on 18# Pirogue

Exactly what epoxy does he use? How does he prep the surface? Looks like the aluminum comes prepainted. Is he epoxying to the the painted surface? Seems you would get a much better bond to well prepped bare aluminum.

    Update on 18# Pirogue

If you want to make it a bit lighter, here is something you can do. Imagine sitting in your typical peerow in the water. Now, lean to the side till the water is about to come over the gunnels at your side. Look at where the waterline now is. It will be at the gunnel tops at your side. However...

21st Century SOF kayak kit build

We got the kayak frame all glued up today. Took 4 hours non stop from start to finish. They say ONE person can do it in that time, but I think thats a bit optimistic for someone who has never done this before. Not to mention there are plenty of times having from 3 to 5 hands is what you need...

    14' x 30" x 18 lb. Pirogue

Re: 14" x 30" x 18 lb. Pirogue If you want to add strength/reduce weight, you might want to make the vertical side "supports" angled fore/aft so that your wood along the sides of the boat form a series of triangles rather than a series of rectangles. If you look at many engineered structures...

    14' x 30" x 18 lb. Pirogue

Re: 14" x 30" x 18 lb. Pirogue I ran across some thin plastic material at Lowes a few months ago. I think I started a thread about it even. I bet it would be a good substitute for the aluminum. Wouldnt have the noise issue aluminum does. And I found out that surprisingly that contact cement...

21st Century SOF kayak kit build

Whats an SO? When an SO asks "does this new homebuilt SOF kayak make me look fat?"...you always answer in the negative... Oh, and SOF means skin on frame :)
