    Paddling times and distances

Just curious what an "average" distance a person could expect to cover on a per-day basis in a canoe or kayak. I'm looking ahead (in years) at a Mississippi Headwaters to Gulf of Mexico trip. I'm thinking of doing it in sections over time, as time allows. So let's see what you guys think...

    my ignorance

Maxi, If the truth be told we all paddle glass.(Well most of us) Most every boat on Matt's site you hear about here or there is in fact a fiberglass boat. We just have a different way of disguising it to look like wood. Lee

Traders Hill on the weekend . F#*k that...(*&@$^^%$

There's something to be said about island camping......... It's GREAT!! I've endured many a night like you just experienced. It SUCKS!!! Being able to slip up to an island on a river and not have any neighbors is just one reason most of us like the paddlin' life. It's good to get reminded...

    Campfire Chatter ...... Stoves.

Ok then, I guess I'll have to hillbilly something together that includes the fan. I'm going to have the wiz kids in our IT department at the college scrounge a fan up out of an old computer. Everything else about the zip looks pretty straight forward. Sealed burn chamber with blow holes for...

drip caps for Wally World paddle

I saw your drip cups, (brilliant!!), and while at a local box store, I came acrossed a rubber roof flashing that was for 1-1/8 to 1-1/4" stacks coming out of a roof. I bought two of them and cut the flat part off the coned area with a utility knife. The doggone things worked great until I had...

    Campfire Chatter ...... Stoves.

I'm pretty much sold on having a stove along for making the necessities of camping(like coffee), but cooking over the fire has a certain appeal to me when I'm going solo. Never thought about packing a wood stove, (but being the hillbilly vagrant I am), I think a #10 can and a church key would...

    plywood choices

I completed a Freedom 15-4 build from JEM and used 1/4" birch ply from the local box store. While I "cheated" a bit on the deck, the final wieght was 46 1/2 #. That's a "first build" and it probably has at least 1/2 gallon too much epoxy, and full 6oz. cloth sheathing her. In short, it's too...

    Meats in Camp

Here I am thinking I'll be reading about meats!! Getting back to the subject, I like to use what I catch, and in Iowa that means Carp. The best reciepe I've come acrossed is this... Pre heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place a gutted, scaled carp on a cedar shingle and place on the center...
