    Jocob's European tour

That's a great way for young people to see some of the world. It ain't cheap, but it is a lot of bang for the buck, and you can feel safe with the kids being chaperoned by teams of certified teachers. It's great that you helped your boy do this. George

    Jocob's European tour

What organization was this with? People to People? Eisenhower foundation? My wife has been group leader on a couple of People to People trips (Europe, Australia) and had a great time. George

    Anyone ever tried this?

What I use on wheelbarrow handles, garden tool handles, and parts of a boat that I don't want to have epoxy on is either linseed oil and turpentine 50/50 (if I think I might want to glue or paint it someday), or linseed oil and turpentine, 50/50, with a brick or two of paraffin per total gallon...

    anchor trolleys

Done it with a jonboat before. It worked OK. Have not tried it with a pirogue or a 'yak. GBinGA

    James River Bateau Festival

Great post and pics. Thanks for taking the trouble! Were there sponsors for some of those boats? That's a big project, building a thing like that. George

    New wallyworld paddle

That sounds reasonable. I can knock something together that will get the job done. It'll be ugly as sin, but that doesn't really matter as long as I get the info I need. George

Effects of Boat's Design On Paddling

Could you consider oars? Or is that impractical for the places that you fish? Oars could be used for main propulsion, with a paddle on board for close quarters or minor adjustments. If you could use oars, extra width is not a problem. George

    New wallyworld paddle

Jack, I see your points. There seems to be no absolute answer. That being the case, I'm getting all the data points I can so I can take some sort of stab at a length to try first. I can build a paddle. Built oars before, and they came out pretty well. I don't want to go to the trouble of...

    Camp coffee

We have a french press and use it when we are in out camper. Takes up less space, and you don't need 110V power. Just boil water. I think it makes a good coffee. George

    Trench cooking

Darn good question. Genghis was a traveling kind of a guy. Probably shopped at the Walmart supercenters along the interstates. Seems like the foil would reflect some of the heat up at the food instead of letting it be absorbed by the ground. Also, if the coals were directly on the ground you...

    Java

I haven't tried filter packs. French press works well and saves space. It's a glass cylinder, with a fine wire mesh plunger that fits into it. You put in a measure of coffee, then fill it with boiling water. Put the plunger on top and leave it a few minutes to brew. When you think it is...

    anchor trolleys

Here's a link that does a pretty good job of describing the system. http://coloradokayakfishing.com/articles/anchor.html They mention that you should be careful about anchoring sideways in any sort of current or strong waves, which sounds like good advice!! I think I'll set up something like...

    anchor trolleys

Mike, Looks like the carabiner rides back and forth on the trolley, and can be positioned anywhere for' and aft. You'd string the anchor line through the carbiner, so that the anchor ends up positioned wherever you put the carabiner. You can even change that location with the anchor deployed...

    Which wood for which part?

Seems like some of the really attractive paddles I've seen had the blades built up from two or more kinds of wood in alternating layers. Don't see why the shaft couldn't be laid up the same way. Matter of fact I've seen that done, somewhere. I got no idea which type of wood would be best in...

Touring Pirogue T-V AKA Brazos Queen

Does the cooler lid have a latch, or does it just kinda snap in place? My point is, if you got the boat upside down, would the contents of the cooler dump out? George

    forgot something

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's just elegant. I honestly don't camp very often (except in the Airstream, which doesn't really count), but I will remember that trick. GBinGA

    New wallyworld paddle

Speaking of kayak paddles, I read somewhere that the overall length is supposed to be the distance from your the ground to you knuckles when standing with your arms extended over your head. This is obviously important if you are about to think about making a paddle. Anybody want to share an...
