    Limestone for filler?

I have a bunch of dolomite limestone that I use in my garden as fertilizer. Since it's pulverized stone couldn't it be used as a filler material? It might not be easy to sand down, but I bet it's strong! I also have plenty of cottonseed meal, gypsum (lime with sulfer) and bone meal. Could any of...

    Stratch Built Jon Boat

Thanks, jboc. I bought Jim Michalak's plans yesterday. It seems easier to build than my UJ Pirouge. Chine logs make is so much simpler, I really don't like working with epoxy, although I will probably use epoxy as the glue.

    Firewood or a boat?

Very nice! Gierking's method uses washers, nuts and bolts. Either way, I think I'll stick with butt joints: simple, effective, strong and durable.

    Firewood or a boat?

You could also consider Gary Dierking's Three Board Canoe. It has a separating hull design and no part of the boat is more than 8 feet long. It's mostly a sailing vessel, but I've emailed him and this kind of boat is used for fishing open water in the south pacific a lot. I wanted to build...

    Stratch Built Jon Boat

Okay, so, I've been wanting to build another boat for a while now. I've went down to Academy and took some measurements of a 15 foot Alumicraft jonboat: 41 inch bottom 19 inch sides 15 3/4 inch transom 59 inch beam 38 1/4 inch bow I'm guessing the flare of makes for the difference between the...

    Plwood

Yeah, That's what I wished I had done with my pirogue. It makes so much sense to do it that way. That's one reason I want to build a new boat: I believe I can build a better boat than my first attempt.

    Hard Chines and Gunnels

Home Depot has 1x2 and 1x3 which I could use for chines and gunnels. They're available in poplar, oak, and cedar and pine. Which of these would be easiest for work with in terms of bending and strength?

    Plwood

I went to Lowe's earlier this week. They had 1/4 inch hardwood plywood -- three layers of oak. Would this be good for a canoe hull?

    The bow angle thing

Well, my first name is Damon, so at least I'm 1 for 3, lol.

    The bow angle thing

I don't know what it's called, but on my UJ Pirogues he mentions 45 degree cut for the bow and stern. I know that an UJ style pirogue the flare and rocker are basically determined by the angle of the bow/stern. I'm trying to build an outrigger canoe with zero rocker and zero no flare. Is there...

    Capacity

Thanks. I could make a hard chine outrigger 6" x 6", then turn it on it's side forming a diamond shape makes it 12 inches since the long side of a triangle is equal to the sum of the short sides. Then again, I never did well in math.

    Capacity

Thanks, George. That is a nice idea: wakeless launch. My main parameters are: a boat that can be carried in the bead of my truck. (No trailers. Sorry, I don't trust those Fulton truck mounts any more, but that's another story.) a boat that can be built and stored in a small space a boat...

    Capacity

I want to build an outrigger capable of displacing my weight (250lbs max) should I go overboard. I plan to fish at night, and there be monster catfish in them waters.

Still no boat but plenty of these

Wow, nice paddles. Dude, you've got to get a boat. Those paddles are beginning to stage a revolt!

    Filler Alternatives

Can you use wheat flour from the grocery store as a filler? What other cheap, locally available fillers can be used?

    Thanks from a newbe!

Beautiful boat. Tell me more about the dolly cart you built for it. I need to build one. Where did you get the wheels, axle, etc? It's nice to see good workmanship.
