    New Black Dog Kayak Completion!

-- I didn't build this one, I only sold it. But, Eric did such a great job on this, I had to share his pics. This is our Albatross 14. He skinned it with canvas and finished the frame and the rest of the wood bright.

    Making a Skirt

-- Are you talking kayak or canoe? For kayak spray skirts there are a couple of good sites out there on how to do it. If you want a neoprene skirt, Duan Strosaker has instructions on how to sew one: http://www.rollordrown.com/kayak/skirt.html And here's one that requires no...

    New Kayak Building Plans: Freedom

-- Nice work Chuck! What kind of plywood did you use?

    New Kayak Building Plans: Freedom

-- Very nice looking kayak. Is it an optical illusion, or does the final design have more of a plum stern than the prototype? We're planning on lengthening our 14 foot to 16, and incorporating a plum stern too. Have you noticed a difference in speed, or is the difference too subtle...

    Greenland Style Kayak

-- Jack, yes, the plywood frames stay in as it's a fuselage style assembly. In fact, the first one that we built, the Albatross 14, is named after the old World War I German fighter plane of the same name, because, sitting in the cockpit we were reminded of the old timey aeroplanes. We...

    boat not square

Did you switch the sides yet? I like Sparkey's suggestion of trying it with the crossmembers. When framing kayaks I've found that things may pul to one side or the other during construction, plywood may be warped, etc., but, as I add parts, everything pulls into place. Apples and oranges...

    Greenland Style Kayak

I've been working on the protoype of our Greenland Style kayak and thought I'd share a couple of pics. Also, I wanted to clue you guys into our free kayak paddle giveaway on the Black Dog Kayaks website. The particulars are 18 feet long, 22 inches wide and around 30 pounds.

It's REALLY not a submarine. (photo intense)

Nice work on the boat and great pics! Thanks for sharing!

    a paper ( no joke ) pirogue

Right, I'd also put this under the category of, "I wonder if that would work?" If I were of a mind to build one of these, I'd have to try one out in person before I actually wasted $100 worth of epoxy on building one.

    a paper ( no joke ) pirogue

Armadillos and leprosy aside, Jacques Mertens, the designer over at bateau.com did write about this version of his cheap canoe on his bbs quite a while ago. I think he did say he didn't recommend doing it this way, but that, done correctly, it can result in a good, lightweight boat.

building my first kayak - any advice?

The 12 Foot plans on the Loganbill site are for the Canvasback, the 14 foot plans are the King Canvasback. I think he may have the PDF labeled incorrectly. I'm glad you found your way over to his site on your own. I've built the 12 foot Canvasback according to plan as well, and, like I said...

building my first kayak - any advice?

Nice! You took my advice before I even had given it! At 14 feet long and 28 (29?) inches wide, King Canvasback can float quite a bit of weight. We're looking forward to seeing the pics. What did you order for canvas?

    boundary waters

I'm also looking forward to the report. Hopefully, there will be pics? I've wanted to get up to the BW for a long time now, but still haven't made it, even though I've lived in WI, MN, and MI, for the majority of my life.

building my first kayak - any advice?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I've been working non-stop all last week on a tandem for a charity run, and now I'm in Wyoming. Skin on Frame for under $200 is very doable. You can find inexpensive plans over at Jack Loganbill's website Our 12 Foot can carry a 200 pound...

    creases in cloth

I almost always use cloth that has been folded, and have had no problems with it. Sometimes I let it lay flat for a few days, but most often, like Matt said, the creases go away when I wet the cloth out with epoxy.

    Another Kayak

Thanks for the link, Chuck. I hadn't seen that one yet. I'm only planning on paddling as far as LaCrosse, Wisconsin, then I'm planning on meeting John and Louis near the end, although I don't know if that's going to work out yet. We're designing and building the tandem/triple kayaks that...

    Another Kayak

And those aren't even my favorite bragging boats. Thanks Matt, I esp. appreciate that coming from someone with so many designs under his belt! Here's the one that I've been paddling almost exclusively lately, and my favorite so far:
