    Making Flotation Bags

Jack asked for info on this so I thought I'd post here and share the info with more than just him. BTW, Jack, I was wrong, and you were right. I had posted info on this here: http://blackdogkayaks.com/forum/YaBB.pl ... 49782415/0 and also somewhere on Sparky's forum. To make flotation bags...

    Kayak Backband

A friend came up this past wekend so that I could help him install foot braces and a backband in his Black Dog Kayak, so I thought I would update the post on the backband. The backband would be Backband 1.1. It's the same design as the first one, but we added eyepads to the cockpit rails to...

    filet video?

I use tape to mark the area and keep stuff clean as well, as I'm one of the world's messiest people. If you're going to put fiberglass over the fillets, lay the glass tape down over the fillet right after you put the fillet in, before the epoxy cures. It takes some pre-planning and...

Santa Fe River (Florida) picture intense!

Interesting report, esp. the part about Naked Ed. There's a convenince store here in the backwoods of Marquette called Phil's 550 Store, and on the first day of summer, he always puts on his sign, "Summer's Here! Get Naked, Drink Beer!" Naked Ed reminded me of that, although, I don't really...

    Black Dog Greenland Style Kayak

Thanks for the comments. My son is enjoying the attention and his friends think it's cool that he's on YouTube. We have talked about, in the future, making our kayaks available as wood strippers, although the Greenland would be better as an S&G. Maybe you'll see such a thing, who knows...

    Black Dog Greenland Style Kayak

I posted video of my 10 year old paddling the Greenland over on YouTube Obviously, the kayak is too large for him, but I think it shows that it's true what they say, that kids and kayaks go together naturally, that they paddle and handle it intuitively. I basically just put him in the kayak...

    Black Dog Greenland Style Kayak

Jack, did you get your paddle yet? This one is not a storm paddle, which is even shorter yet. This is the paddle that the US Postal Service broke in half delivering it to a customer. It looked like they had put it against the curb and drove over it, as it was broken straight through the...

    Black Dog Greenland Style Kayak

That same burst of wind that almost capsized me, flipped a Hobie cat that was downwind from me. The two crewmen struggled to flip the boat back over, but didn't have any luck. After twenty minutes of that, I was debating paddling out to them to find out if they wanted me to call for help on my...

    Black Dog Greenland Style Kayak

We had a good day out on Lake Superior today. We went up to Big Bay, Michigan, thirty miles north of Marquette. Marquette was getting big thunderstorms and there was talk of a tornado twenty miles out on the lake, but we found mostly sunny conditions at Big Bay. The kids hung out on the beach...

    Rudders?

Right, my point was that you've been proven correct over hundreds of years. ;) A skeg, or a rudder, for that matter, doesn't have to be on the center line to function, it just looks better that way.

    Rudders?

Sailboats have been doing this for hundreds of years with leeboards, A sideboard which goes on the downwind side of the boat. Here's an article by boat designer Jim Michalak on leeboards: http://homepages.apci.net/~michalak/15jul04.htm This is also essentially what you do when you trail...

    New Kayak Plans: The Laker

Looks like a good design and it has good looks too. Looking forward to seeing pics of yet another Mick-build too!

Alternate to butt and scarf joint...

I believe that such a boat is known as a dugout canoe. :P

    Rudders?

Sure, where were you with your build pics a few months ago, when I could've used them? I've been building rudders out of carbon fiber with a foam core for our tandem kayaks, so I'd be interested in seeing how others do it. Looking forward to the pics.

About those fiberglass butt joints. . .

I used the glass butt joint on my 14 foot catboat and I like it. It's easy and strong. I used two layers of 9 oz glass on each side, if memory serves. Here's a pic of said butt-joint, i.e., the Payson Joint, courtesy of http://www.duckworksmagazine.com

Mississippi River Trip - Kayak 4 A Kure

Friend Bear, that's the word he used. I assume it was an exaggeration. I think that is what Ray Nagin called it, but you're right, it's not martial in the legal sense of the term. From a news article - "Nagin said that Martial Law means that officers don't have to worry about civil rights...

Mississippi River Trip - Kayak 4 A Kure

I talked to Louis this afternoon. They came off the River on schedule and are back in Amarillo. Louis said that the lack of updates was due to the fact that after they left Tunica they no longer had internet access. The trip went well and went faster than expected. They were moving so...

Mississippi River Trip - Kayak 4 A Kure

Bear, No updates yet. I haven't been able to get in touch with anyone from their crew yet, so I assume they're on the road home. I'll post when I know something.

    quick and easy

Very cool. I was under the impression that you were going to try to make a two piece paddle. Thanks for the pics.

Mississippi River Trip - Kayak 4 A Kure

Here's a news report from the Tunica, Mississippi Visitor's Bureau. No mention of Black Dog Kayaks, but the pic includes the kayak and my spare paddle that I left for them to use. http://hospitality-1st.com/PressNews/Tu ... 52907.html
