Gear Report My new bivy tent

For the Apostle Islands trip, I picked up a Eureka Solitude Bivy Tent on Amazon.com for $55. You can't sit up all the way in it, so it's not for everyone, but I didn't have any problem with it. Of course, we didn't get weathered in at all, either. Ask me again after eight hours in a...

Good deal on a Coleman hiking stove

I got some cash from my in-laws for my birthday and went to Wal-Mart and picked up the last of their Coleman Peak-1 3001 hiking stoves, which they're clearancing now to make way for the Coleman F1 Ultralight stove. Cost was $21.99 and the can of fuel was $4.88. I've heard that REI has it for...

    Home made hammock

I bought some hammock fabric from Wal-Mart too, hoping to make one for the Apostle Islands trip. Didn't happen, so I went with a bivy tent, but I still plan to make the hammock. Especially useful, I think, for commando camping on the shore of Lake Superior, i.e., camping where you're not...

That's covered under "etc." The camera was in my PFD attached to a lanyard.

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

On our recent trip to the Apostle Islands, we tried to pack with the mentality of an ultralight backpacker. But, as expected, our packing list grew a little bit above that. What you see below is what was packed in my kayak for a four day trip, minus a large ziplock bag filled with Lipton...

    Another non paddling tale

No, but I'm looking forward to it. I've hunted a lot of coyotes with mouth blown predator calls back when I lived in Colorado. My dad is a pastor down in Corpus and a couple of church members have feral pig problems, so they're always telling me to bring my guns down and eliminate some pigs...

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

Here's some video for you: The Caveman rolls his Madeline 16 at South Twin Island I'd have to say that Mark K. was really an ironman on our paddles. Except for questioning our navigation and constantly checking to see if he had cellphone service out on the Lake, Mark paddled without...

    Another non paddling tale

I'll be hunting feral pigs on a couple of Texas ranches this winter when I'm down in Corpus Christi visiting my parents. Can't wait to do it. Your post provides some tips and some motivation. Thanks!

Paddling the St Mary's River in GA 8 Aug 08

I think i'd maybe get claustrophobia on that river, but it looks like a beautiful place to paddle. The sand looks like it makes for a comfortable sleeping place. Thanks for the pics!

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

The do-rag is a leftover from his days in the Army Rangers. His alternate headgear is an O.D. boonie hat. He forgot to put on sunscreen on Thursday and ended up with a white scalp and a red face with a prominent do-rag line on his forehead.

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

Thursday, Day 4: Camp on Stockton Island. I was sleeping in the eight foot Eureka yellow sarcophagus. It wasnt' too bad, except that you couldn't sit up inside it. The four mile crossing to Madeline was the roughtest of any of the days we had paddled. Currents and waves funnel...

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

Oh, I know, I didn't take it as criticism. I've noticed the same thing. Wednesday, Day 3: The day started out a little breezy, with a bit of chop on the Lake. NOAA predicted that the waves would die down later in the day, so we decided to wait a couple of hours before we launched...

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

Hey, we had chicken jambalaya on Wednesday night. That was probably my favorite meal of the trip. I'll have more pics from the rest of the trip later tonight or tomorrow.

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

Tuesday, Day 2: With just a quick one mile crossing from Rocky Island to South Twin Island, the second day was an easy one. Mark K. had only slept forty minutes in the last twenty four hours, so we decided to let him sleep in. He had done a marathon drive from St. Louis to his home in...

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

People tell me that I'm getting old, I just don't feel it. We would have been sipping cocktails in camp well before evening had we started on time. But, we had to lit. finish building Mark K.'s kayak before we could go. That set the tone for the rest of our week, as we made camp in...

    My new Madeline 16

John, that's what motivated us to start Black Dog Kayaks. It took me so long to cut out the parts for my first skin on frame kayak, that I figured that other people must have the same problems I have. If you can drill a hole in a piece of wood, you can build one of our kayaks. It's as simple...

    Apostle Islands, Northern Wisconsin

I just got back Friday night from the Apostle Islands in Northern Wisconsin. We spent four days paddling the islands on Lake Superior and put over forty miles under our keels. You can see the complete route that we took on the map below. Day 1: After checking in at the Apostle...

    My new Madeline 16

Yes, 18 ounce fabric has its drawbacks, and a few wrinkles are one of the drawbacks. The bottom and the chines are wrinkle free though. A lot of traditional style builders cover the kayak with 8 or 10 ounce nylon or polyester and heat shrink that, then cover it with a two part urethane or a...
