You will love the planer.
Sanding dust from a belt sander is normally ok but if you have a piece of screen wire or a tea strainer it will work great.
A little trick is to use white flour with the wood flour to lighten the color.

I have done panels with sander , scraper ,hand plane and a bench mounted . They will all work ,but there is no comparison between the rest and the bench planer, it leaves you with no humps and bumps and I can do a 17 ft panel in less than 5 min ,with a scraper or sander you are talking hours...

Glass the whole thing or glass nothing , I didnt glass anything before I assembled the boat.
You will create hard spots just glass part of the boat.

If you want 1 inch cedar go to Lowes and look for there 5/4 cedar decking .
