    Stitch and Glue No Plans

A good rule of thumb is this. Find out what people in your environment and similar environments around the world are using for your situation. Chances are you will find a boat design that has been perfected over hundreds or thousands of years. People scratching for a living can't afford to...

The end result is very good. Nice finish. Under 15 lbs is awesome and should make loading and unloading a breeze.

    Perfect vs good enough

A little more insight into my troubled mind. I make boats partly ( or maybe even mostly) for the artistic thrill of crafting a 3 dimensional object. The shape is the big thing for me. So, when the sides of a pirogue are fastened together at the ends and clamped to the center jig.......THAT...

    Life goes on.....

I've been watching some carpentry videos on Youtube and found one featuring Larry Haun. Evidently, he is the crown prince of framing carpenters. He had it down to a science. He wrote books about it and everything. At 79, he and his brother could still frame an entire modest sized house in...

Yes I did, Jack. I also gave them the link to this site and told them about the Swamper build thread if they were interested.

    sold the Swamper

A nice young couple New Orleans just drove away with my old Swamper kayak. They strapped it down on top of their Prius. One less thing cluttering up the shop. I got what I had in it plus maybe a little. Fair enough.

    Air Power

Bee, with that Diana, I got almost a complete pass-through on two good sized coons. they didn't go far. An adult coon is a fair sized animal. I also shot 5 skunks, one behind the other, coming single file down a trail. At one of our Lead Flings, we were shooting at a metal gong at 100 yards...

    Pirogue or kayak...

It's hard to beat a 13-15 foot pirogue for an all-around fishing platform. The rocker can be adjusted to your liking very easily. If you're not looking for a speed demon, keep the boat wider out towards the ends and make the bottom panel 24-26" wide. Good wood and glass would give you a 13...

First excursion in the China Syndrome.

Yeah, Jack, sometimes it just doesn't work out like we plan.

First excursion in the China Syndrome.

I went out to Lake Verret this morning. The lake was choppy, with small whitecaps starting. I put in, paddled around the end of the point of the parking lot and promptly turned around and picked up. Not fun to paddle in a chop and not the best conditions for a boat with 9.5" sides.

First excursion in the China Syndrome.

Chuck, what we call high river (or bayou) banks are about a foot high.

First excursion in the China Syndrome.

Went out today about a mile from my deserted hometown. Went down Grand Bayou to an old oilfield canal. At the end of the canal, I noticed somewhat of an opening I'd never noticed before. Keep in mind I spent my childhood and teenage years living in a boat in these bayous. Never saw this...

    Not surprised

Nope. The one they SAID was legal had the name of the hospital on the top. Trouble is, that name was not used until years later. OOppps.

    Thinning epoxy for final coat

It looks like the outside bottom of this pirogue needs a bit more epoxy. I'd like to get away with less sanding of the surface. Has anyone experimented with thinning the epoxy so it will go on smoother for the final coat? What solvent is normally used to thin Raka epoxy?
