Pete, did you put the boat directly onto the scale? Try having an observer; weigh just you; then you holding the boat free of any support. Also, most scales read more accurately when on a firm, non-carpeted surface. Any way around, a 28-30 pound boat is a lot easier to handle than a 55-60 pounder.

We traditionally have a dog along on our annual Geezer Run canoe trip on Michigan’s Au Sable River. We guys need some adult supervision. Tyler, the Brittany who came first, has had his last trip. He’s too old and crippled now to go along. Now, Dewey comes along. He’s an Australian mix with...

In the horse drawn days of farming, corn pickers weren’t what we have today. Dry, ripe fields of corn were cut off just above ground level. Individual stalks were gathered into an armful bundle, and tied with twine. After Cyrus McCormick’s invention of the corn binder, that part of the job was...

Never Cry Wolf - you’ll like, and learn from it. When you read about wolf behavior in the family, you actually may recognize some behaviors in your human family. (Assuming, of course, that you really are human,) ;-) Bazinga!

My canoe thwarts are light rope, drawn or twisted to desired tension. Thwarts operate in tension, not compression. If a loaded boat gets bridged - supported on both ends with its middle in the air - the hull expands outward. That puts a thwart in tension. It’s a thwart’s function to hold the...

    FIRE CAKES

My Dad’s Coleman 2 burner was bought in the 40s. I was concerned about rust in the tank. When you pump air in to pressurize the tank, moisture is being pumped in too. It pretty much remains there. Actually, not the rust itself. If you take a roll of solid solder (not a liquid core), and use...
