The Kevlar is weaved in a diagonal pattern and held in place with hot glue tape. This build is not like the other SOF builds on this site, because there is no sewing involved. The Dacron is held in place with hot glue tape and then heated to make it shrink.
This is a Geodesic Aerolite SOF design canoe.
14' long, 33" beam, 1 1/2" rocker and around 27lbs.
All white oak strips with Black Walnut seats, thwarts & Breast hooks.
It will be finished with Kevlar thread diagonally wrapped and Dacron cloth.
loafer, I thought about that too, but I think the name fits him well.
Beekeeper, I was wander about making a boat from the balsa mats too. See no reason it would not work and it should be strong and light.
Thanks for the comments.
Thanks texastom, Actually I ended the year off by finishing this re-build. The hull was in too good of shape to see it go to waste. It truly was a labor of love and I hope someone else thinks it was well worth it.
Bought Beekeepers Bumble Bee and totally rebuilt the hull (rotten wood/wet foam) with composites, updated and polished. It looks like a new boat, even though it is a 1999.
Here is the link to all the photos of this long project. Please enjoy. http://s786.photobucket.com/user/mac161 ... t=2&page=1
Waiting for my weight tester to return and we will give this boat it maiden voyage.
I will take the finished pics then.
I believe it might be a keeper :!: :?: :D
The picture is of the outside gunnel sliced at the beam.
I used a silica, woodflour and epoxy mixture, C- clamped them together until they setup.
The wood is white oak.
There are actually 4 splices in the center area, but the inside and outside splices are staggered about a foot apart.
None have...
Well after suffering a few setbacks on the varnish, exterior paint and a death in the family I am starting to see progress again.
Should finish the exterior painting this week.
Waiting on Beekeeper for some of that BM Marine Varnish.
I voted for a gas outboard.
They are alot lighter compared to a trolling motor and battery, very reliable (depending on brand) and less hassle.
The 4 cycles do not burn alot of gas and are pretty quiet.
Chuck, these are sold in your state:

Check them...
Chuck,
To many variations in the plywood. Believe me it looks alot better painted.
Planning to paint the outside of the hull white and varnish the rest of the trim.
Working on the cane seats right now.
Finally making progress again.
Attached are pics of the hull with inside gunales and deck (first coat of epoxy).
Next pics will be of the finished hull.
Also working on cane seats.
