Jack,
Don't use Buckthorn. If this is Rhamnus catharticus the berries can cause vomiting, dirrhoea and are poisonous.
The leaves are larger and rounder than the sloe and I think the fruit may be held on longer stalks more like little cherries than sloes which are held close to the branch...
18%... that's strong beer!
The idea with Sloe Gin is that you make it every year. I missed the crop last year due to family goings-on. I should be drinking last years while shaking this lot.
At 40% alcohol by volume it probably should be drunk in smaller glasses. I have 7 pints on the go...
Here is a recipe that should appeal to most of the regular folk. It has a couple of nice features: one of the key ingredients is free and the result is highy alcoholic.
I don't know whether Sloes grow in the USA and Oz but in the UK they are a reasonably commen hedgrerow shrub or bush (Prunus...
Mick,
She's a beaut mate!
I see the build technique is typical of a JEM craft. It's a bit fiddly but the boats always look great and this is no exception.
Nice slotted gunwales. If you build them up with epoxy then presumably you have to get a varnish layer down the slot once...
Nice one Mick,
I like the look of the green paint. Is that graphite on the bottom?
Also is that ribless, with braces between the gunwales at about 1/3 and 2/3 of the length?
Jack,
They couldn't find any flat bottomed logs :D
Seriously, what a piece of woodcraft. Cutting into a raw log with hand tools to make a nice 1" thick, uniform hull like that. Any idea how old it actually is?
I particularly like the wood-finished ones. The multi-rib version looks very sleek and I agree with Mick that the version with the recurved sides at the bow is a beauty.
I like the yellow boat, personally I don't think it has the beauty of the other two but it has a really solid working-boat...
Hey Seedtick,
That's a fine flotilla you have there. Once the first couple are done I can start trying to vary the various dimensions and see where it leads me to.
Jack,
Yessir GMT, Zulu or currently BST for a week or so.
Mick,
Quite so. I like the look of the proportions of the UJ Pirogue as it stands and for the first build I'm going by-the-book (ok apart from the raised sides). Second or third version I might try varying it a bit but I want to be...
I fancy trying that. I'll make it Project Phase II
Just for now it is 23:00 and it has spent the whole weekend raining. So I am consoling myself with a 12yr old Jameson Irish 'Distillery Reserve'.
G'night.
Quite right too Jack.
Imagine having to spend hours making your own boat out of that old-fashioned wood stuff.
Then imagine the tiresomeness of having to paddle yourself out and sit with the mellow sunlight glinting gently on the warm golden grain of your boat, as you sip a beer waiting for...
Hi Seedtick,
Initially I was thinking the same but then I just liked the aesthetics.
Here is a pretty one in a wood finish:

and one in a white paintd finish:

Then I read about the possibilities...
Thanks Chuck,
No... not a good day out! That is pretty much the process that I had planned but I like the tip with the tape.
Mick suggested raising the sides, which was interesting as I had already worked out that I could go to 11" myself. It is nice to know others have done the same to...
Morning/Evening All (pick your own timezone!)
I was wondering how many folk have raised the sides of their UJ Pirogues by an inch as it should be possible to get 11" sides and the standard width bottom board out of a 48" sheet.
How have you handled the join between the ribs and the side...
Wow Chuck,
That's some camp cooking! Beats my bean surprise (baked beans with chilli!).
We have a slow-cooker at home. It has a large ceramic pot with a lid and it sits in a heating jacket that uses about as much power as a light bulb. If you put cheaper cuts of meat in with some for ~6hrs...
Now I'm HUNGRY Chuck (mmmm slow cooked pork with red wine...)
Mind you we have an Epoisse cheese for supper tonight, so I have to pop out soon for a robust red wine. It is a great cheese which I first had in a vinyard in France. It does pong though. If you took one on a trip it would keep the...
I had a look at the dry bottom of my Jack Daniels 'Single Barrel' bottle. Not much left over in there :(
Reminds me of a 'helpful tip' on TV "And now we will look at how to use up left over wine"... my wife and I looked at each other, not usually a problem in our house!
