    pirogue refurb

Let's see if this old thread will open. Is the jam cleat a simple v groove or is there something exotic hiding there? I've put v's in pvc pipe, like the wood idea.

Not an Uncle John Pirogue Seat

Thanks for posting this, took me a while to look up the scripture(knew there must be one). I may have to make something similar for my grandkids someday. Andy

    Planter Box Piirogue

Some of you may remember about 5 years ago I built a camo “17 lb” pirogue with a luan or maybe sandeply bottom, no fiberglass. Of course being stored outside the bottom didn’t last long. My Bride has a vivid imagination and an eye for colors, she took over the boat. It now is the main attraction...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

Just a little time for boat building today, still playing with the tumblehome/deck. But I’ve come to a stopping point, for a while at least. It is time for us to be back in Kansas. Joyce’s Texas oncologist is turning her treatment back to the Kansas Doctor for a while. The plan is to return to...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

Thanks for the encouragement. As you know this is a lot different than building from plans. More fun and good exercise for an aging brain. It's kind'a hard to keep my primary objective of making panel templates for future use a priority. Not much boat work today, most of today was spent with...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

Spent most of today's work on refining the tumble homes to make a good usable pattern. The were good enough to stitch up, but I wanted the ends to come together without pressure. With that done I used cardboard to pattern and cut out the TH supports for the widest point, then managed to glass...

    Panel Strength

My theory is that if the boat is glassed after it is in it's final shape it would be stronger, no pressure to release. But that runs counter to stressed skin construction. I think I'd better leave that thinking to the engineers! Andy

    SS&G No Plans Again!

It split length wise in relation ship to the wood strips. I think you may be on to something about the orientation of the strips. The wood seems to be more brittle than usual but I've built 9 boats with the strips parallel to the edges and NEVER broken a panel, using tight bond only. This is the...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

The tumble homes took a turn today. I was working out how to terminate the tumble home into the decks, when I remembered my objective was to create a set of patterns to use in the future. So I diverted my attention to making the full length tumble homes fit perfect (better). Of course when I was...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

Today I lightly sanded the wet out coat on the outside and wiped it down and put on the first fill coat. This was a good time to put a 4th layer of cloth over the end stems. I like to have extra cloth in the most vulnerable wear areas.I cut some scrap cloth on the bias so it would lay smooth and...

    SS&G No Plans Again!

The edges of the fiberglass on the keel were sanded first thing this morning. the ragged edges were not easy, I should have used the masking tape technique to make a smoother straight edge. I’ll do that technique on the two cloth panels today. This shows the masking tape edge where the seam of...
