I like wood. If you happen to break a wood handle, you could probably cobble one up on site. If you break a fiberglass handle ( that's a BIG if) I don't know that you could easily get the remnants out of the head. I have a feeling they're epoxied in. You might dull a knife several times to get all the fiberglass out of the head.
Myself, I would go with a medium sized, quality machete. I find they work better on the small sized stuff you're likely to encounter......... maybe up to the 4" diameter range.
