    Poor Man's Fiberglass

@beekeeper the baton idea is brilliant! I will know that for next time. I am happy to report that the seams are holding really well once I coated both sides. I have made a bunch of progress over the past week since the weather has been nice and sunny here in SC. Once I can figure out how to...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

@Kayak Jack, it's been a blessing to me to be able to help her. Though she is starting to have some health issues, she still has a sharp mind, even in her 90's. COVID has made us cautious of being around as much as we would have like to, but we are there as much as we can be. Helped to move her...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

Well, I thought I would give an update. The past couple of weekends have been spent doing woodworking, just not on the pirogue. I have been building a wheelchair ramp for my grandmother. Almost have it wrapped up and hope to be done on Saturday morning. We have also had some strange weather here...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

Man, that is a beautiful boat! Is that latex paint that you used? I still have a ways to go before I have to make a decision, but I leaning towards acrylic latex currently. I started the build last weekend. Finished the transom, bow, and have the ribs (minus the lap joints) ready to assemble. I...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

@Kayak Jack, I certainly will! I had Monday off so I was able to pick up the clamps I needed along with the wood. I made some head way. Over the course of the past few months, I ended up buying three sets of plans from Uncle John's; the jon boat, bayou skiff, and most recently the pirogue. I...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

@jdupre', good point! I wonder if factoring in a bit more length of the chines and having them meet at an angle would work on the bow. Same could be done for the rub rails. Definitely something to explore.

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

@beekeeper I like that idea and I think I am going to plan on doing just that! I had a similar idea about putting the chines on the inside but it would make it much easier doing it on the outside as you suggested. I greatly appreciate the post!

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

Thank you gentlemen for the welcomes and great information! I appreciate the insights and advice. I can say I am definitely off the PMF idea for a UJ pirogue altogether now. I more of a utilitarian than a perfectionist myself. As long as the boat floats and doesn't leak, the looks don't matter...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

Thanks for the info and welcome, @oldbuffpilot! I was actually planning on going the 1/4" plywood route myself. After reflecting more on the build, I will probably only use the PMF on the butt joints and outside seams. I am planning on using a either latex exterior paint or spar varnish on the...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

Thanks for the welcome, @Kayak Jack! My oldest son is just as eager as I am to get started. We do a lot of bank catfishing together but wanted to make a pirogue and eventually a jon boat to get us out on the water. My father is from Louisiana and of course was very supportive of the idea of...

    Poor Man's Fiberglass

This is my first post on this forum. I actually joined after reading this thread. I am new to boatbuilding but have messed around with woodworking for sometime. I have used fiberglass in the past and really enjoyed the process. However the last time that I used it, I had an allergic reaction. I...
